Perimeter, Beam, Schnabel and Stretch Trailers
Specialized heavy haul trailers, with the makers' published ratings checked October 2026
Quick answer
Which specialized trailer does an oversize load need?
Start from the limit the load breaks. Longer than a lowboy deck: a stretch trailer such as the XL 80 FDE, 48 ft closed and 81 ft open. Tall and wide: a perimeter frame like the Trail King TK160, 12 to 20 ft wide and rated 160,000 lb uniform. Self-supporting towers and girders: schnabel goosenecks or steer dollies. Heavier still: jeeps, boosters, then modular axle lines rated per line.

Match the trailer to what limits the load
Most heavy machines ride a lowboy trailer, an RGN trailer or a double drop. Among the heavy haul trailer types, the ones on this page take over when a load is longer than a 23 to 34 ft deck, wider than an 8 ft 6 in deck with outriggers, too tall for even a 12 in well, or heavier than a 2- or 3-axle trailer can spread. Every trailer figure below is the maker's own, from Trail King, XL Specialized, Fontaine, Talbert and Goldhofer.
| The load is | Trailer | Published example | Loads the maker names |
|---|---|---|---|
| Longer than the closed deck | Stretch (extendable) flatbed, step deck, RGN or double drop | XL 80 FDE: 48 ft closed, 81 ft open, 80,000 lb overall | Long loads resting on two points (Talbert rates its 55SA TELE on a two-point rigid load base) |
| Tall, wide and heavy | Perimeter (expandable) frame | Trail King TK160: 12-20 ft wide, 160,000 lb uniform, 150,000 lb in 16 ft | "Even the tallest equipment" (Trail King) |
| Very heavy industrial piece | Beam trailer: girder bridge on modular axle lines | Goldhofer FAKTOR 5: up to 1,102,000 lb, depending on combination | Transformers, generators and other industrial components (Goldhofer) |
| Self-supporting tower section | Schnabel goosenecks | Trail King Gen 3: 85,000 lb per gooseneck | Wind tower sections (Trail King) |
| Long self-supporting beam | Steer dolly behind a tractor or jeep | Trail King 120 LPSD-HS: 120,000 lb, 10 ft wide | Bridge beams and steel girders (Talbert) |
| Over a standard trailer's axle limits | Jeeps, boosters, 13-axle combinations | XL Lightweight 13 Axle: 170,000 lb in 10 ft | Wind turbine nacelles (XL) |
| Too heavy for jeeps and boosters | Hydraulic modular trailer (HMT) or SPMT | Goldhofer THP/SL: 99,000 lb per axle line at 0.6 mph | Offshore wind tower segment on 22 axle lines (Goldhofer) |
Every capacity on this page is a maker's rating on the basis it prints (distributed, concentrated over a length, per gooseneck or per axle line), not a legal payload. Landoll's spec pages put it plainly: "Capacity ratings are frame capacities only"; axle ratings and state and federal rules decide what can actually be hauled.
HTS Logistics is a licensed property broker (MC# 1178470) and owns none of this equipment. We book carriers that run it, plan the permits, surveys and escorts around the load and price the whole move; to start one, book superload and multi-axle trucking.
What is a perimeter trailer?
A perimeter trailer carries its load on an outer frame that can widen around it, instead of on a solid full-width deck. Trail King's TK160 Perimeter Expanding Frame grows from 12 ft to 20 ft overall, leaving 10 ft 8 in to 18 ft 8 in of clear space inside, and is rated 160,000 lb uniform or 150,000 lb in 16 ft. Trail King says its low deck height lets it "haul even the tallest equipment".
XL Specialized sells the same idea as a system. Its 130 DGX and 180 DGX double gooseneck expandables also open from 12 to 20 ft wide and are rated 130,000 lb and 180,000 lb distributed. The 130 comes with a 2-axle jeep and the 180 with a 3-axle jeep, each with a double gooseneck, a steer dolly and deck sections, and XL quotes a low overall height of 9 ft 10 in for easier loading.
The frame sets the permit before the load does. Closed, a TK160 or DGX is 12 ft wide, 3 ft 6 in over the 102 in federal width on the National Network (23 CFR 658.15), so every move is a width-permit move. In New York, one certified escort is required as soon as a load passes 12 ft; past 16 ft the move becomes a Type 1S superload with a police escort, and two-lane roads need three certified escorts. Opened to 20 ft, a frame sits right on Texas's line: anything wider and the carrier must physically inspect and certify the route in writing, and TxDOT's Houston District requires law enforcement escorts front and rear. Escort triggers in other states are on our pilot car and police escort requirements by state page.
What is a beam trailer?
"Beam trailer" covers three different setups, so pin down which one a quote means. The heaviest is a girder bridge: beams that span between two groups of modular axle lines and carry the load between them. Trail King lists "multi-axle suspension beam and dual lane transport trailers" among its specialized builds, and Goldhofer's North American module brochure names "transformers, generators or other industrial components" as the loads for its high girder bridges. Its FAKTOR 5 is listed at up to 1,102,000 lb of payload depending on combination, for loads 9 ft 10 in to 22 ft 2 in wide and 36 ft 1 in to 55 ft 9 in long, on 2 x 12 to 2 x 20 axle lines.
The second is a beam-deck lowboy, where the main beams carry the load and there is no full-width floor. Fontaine's Magnitude 55H MBMD has a 26 ft beam deck at 22 in loaded height and 6 in of ground clearance, with 1.5 in apitong on the side rails only. It is rated 55 tons in 12 ft with a 4-axle close-coupled or single-axle stinger setup and weighs 20,885 lb.
The third is hauling beams themselves. Bridge beams and steel girders are self-supporting, so they ride between a tractor or jeep at the front and a steer dolly at the back, with no trailer deck under the middle (dollies are covered below).
Transformers are the first load Goldhofer names for girder bridges, and Census port data shows how many arrive. The U.S. imported $7.49 billion of liquid-filled transformers in 2025 (HS 8504.21-.23), $4.02 billion of them large units over 10,000 kVA, and 42.2% of the large units' value that came by sea arrived outside containers. Newark ranked number 4 among U.S. ports for both groups ($538.1 million and $210.7 million); Houston led for large units with $1.25 billion, 31.1% of the national total. On first-published figures, large-unit imports rose 11.4% by value in January to August 2026 against the same months of 2025. Port pickups are covered on our imported transformers and breakbulk page.
How far does a stretch trailer extend?
A stretch trailer telescopes for loads longer than its closed deck. The models below open by 21 to 33 ft, and XL's 80 FDE flatbed reaches 81 ft overall, 28 ft past the 53 ft semitrailer New York allows on its qualifying highways. Closed, the 80 SDE and 80 FDE are 48 ft long, the same as XL's fixed 80 SD; the extension is what separates them from a regular step deck trailer or flatbed trailer. Talbert's 55SA TELE is listed with decks from 32 ft 6 in to 54 ft.
| Model | Type (length measured) | Closed to open | Loaded deck height | Maker's rating | Empty weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fontaine Magnitude 55MX | RGN | 29' 4" to 50' 4" | 20 in | 55 tons in 16 ft closed; 55 tons in deck length less 2 ft open | 27,110 lb |
| XL 80 HDE | RGN | 28' 7" to 49' 11" | 20 in | 80,000 lb overall; 60,000 lb in 10 ft, closed | Not published |
| XL 80 SDE | Step deck (main deck) | 38' 0" to 62' 4" | 40 in | 80,000 lb overall; 60,000 lb in 10 ft, closed | Not published |
| XL 80 FDE | Flatbed (overall) | 48' 0" to 81' 0" | 58 in | 80,000 lb overall; 60,000 lb in 10 ft, closed | Not published |
| Fontaine Renegade XN20 | Double drop (well) | 29' 0" to 50' 0" | 20 in | 40 tons in 16 ft | 22,490 lb |
| Trail King 80MED | Double drop (well) | 34' 0" to 59' 4" | 22 in | 60,000 lb in 10 ft, closed | Not published |
Fontaine's Xcalibur stretch flatbed and drop deck are left out: their own spec pages give two different deck heights and two different lengths for each model.
Read the rating together with the deck position. Fontaine rates the 55MX at 55 tons in 16 ft closed but over the deck length less 2 ft when open, and Talbert rates the 55SA TELE at 110,000 lb on a two-point rigid load base 14 ft long when retracted, or 4 ft shorter than the extended deck. A long rigid load bears near its two ends, so check the open rating against where those two support points will sit. Stretch double drops are compared with fixed wells on our double drop trailer page.
Opened, every one of these runs as an over-length load. New York holds a semitrailer to 48 ft, or 53 ft on qualifying highways (VTL 385(3)), and its escort rules start at 80 ft overall, a line the XL 80 FDE crosses fully open before a tractor is coupled.
How does a schnabel trailer carry a wind tower section?
With no deck at all. Front and rear goosenecks clamp the ends of the load, and the load itself becomes the frame between them. Trail King's Gen 3 schnabel goosenecks (24 ft front, 24 ft 6 in rear) are each rated 85,000 lb and weigh 11,850 lb and 11,220 lb. Pivoting towers raise and lower the load, and a telescoping tower adapts to the flange diameter of the tower section.
If a section splits its weight evenly, the pair gives 170,000 lb of gooseneck rating, and the goosenecks add 23,070 lb of their own to the gross. Trail King's 120 LPSD-HS steerable dolly "can be used with a Schnabel setup", and Goldhofer's tower adapters, listed at up to 397,000 lb of payload, hold tower segments between its heavy-duty modules instead.
Length is the schnabel's permit problem, because the load plus two goosenecks is long by design. Past 160 ft a New York move is a Type 1S superload, and Texas wants front and rear escorts and a carrier route inspection beyond 125 ft.
Jeeps, boosters and steer dollies: how multi-axle trailers add capacity
Federal rules allow 20,000 lb on a single axle and 34,000 lb on a tandem (23 CFR 658.17), and state permits set axle-group limits of their own, so the way to carry more is to put more axles under the load. XL pitches its high-capacity detachable gooseneck multi-axles at loads over 120,000 lb, scaled with jeeps, boosters and dollies.
A jeep rides between the tractor and the trailer's gooseneck (XL calls a one-axle jeep a "joe dog"). Trail King rates its TK80J at 80,000 lb on 2 axles and the TK100J at 100,000 lb on 3, with double-drop-style versions at the same ratings. Fontaine's 302 Jeep for the Magnitude 55H and 55L Plus has 2 axles on a 50 in spread, an 8 ft width and a 55 in fifth wheel, and is used with the trailer's optional 23 in flipbox; Fontaine does not publish its capacity.
A booster pins on behind the trailer. XL calls a booster on a rigid spreader bar "East Coast" and a pivoting, self-equalizing one "West Coast", and Trail King says a booster adds axle spread "for legal hauling during restrictions and added weight capabilities during permit loads". Neither raises the trailer's own rating. Trail King's steerable TKHD-S (110,000 lb overall, 90,000 lb in 10 ft closed, 14 in loaded deck, 9 ft wide) can be ordered reinforced for a single-axle booster; its TKHDG-S (160,000 lb overall and in 20 ft, 17 in mini-deck) comes reinforced for a tri-axle booster.
Worked example: a Cat D10 ships at 111,739 lb with its blade, push arms and ripper off, which is 1,739 lb over the TKHD-S's 110,000 lb rating, so it steps up to the TKHDG-S class. On that trailer's 17 in deck the D10's 14 ft 3 in stack rides at about 15 ft 8 in: over 14 ft, so a New York move needs a height-pole escort, but under the state's 16 ft superload line. At 12 ft 4 in over the trunnions it needs escorts for width as well. Our D10 and D11 bulldozer shipping weights list what comes off and travels separately.
Build the jeep, trailer and booster as one system and you get setups like XL's Lightweight 13 Axle: a jeep, a 170 mechanical gooseneck trailer and a booster (60 West Coast, or a 60 Power Booster for the East Coast), rated 170,000 lb in 10 ft on a 10 ft wide, 30 ft main deck. XL markets it for wind turbine nacelles.
For long self-supporting loads the rear wheels leave the trailer altogether. Talbert's 6-axle steer dolly carries "bridge beams, steel girders" on a hydraulic bunk, with automatic and manual steering on 24 tires. Trail King's 120 LPSD-HS is rated 120,000 lb, 10 ft wide, with 60 in axle spacing and a hatbox that rotates 60 degrees each way, and XL's 6-axle dolly lets its load platform swing 70 degrees each way. Talbert and XL do not publish dolly capacities. To check what an axle group may legally carry for its spacing, use the federal Bridge Formula calculator.
How are hydraulic modular trailers rated?
Per axle line, at a stated speed. A hydraulic modular trailer (HMT) is built from axle-line modules with hydraulic suspension and multi-way steering that couple end to end and side by side; towed versions take a tractor, and self-propelled ones (SPMTs) carry their own power packs. Goldhofer rates its towed THP/SL and self-propelled PST/SL-E alike at 99,000 lb per axle line at 0.6 mph, on modules 9 ft 10 in wide.
| Module | Type | Axle-line rating | Dead weight, 4 axle lines | Axle lines per module | Width |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Goldhofer THP/SL | Towed HMT | 99,000 lb per axle line at 0.6 mph (45 t at 1 km/h) | 30,500 lb | 2-8 | 9' 10" |
| Goldhofer THP/SL-L | Towed HMT, road-speed | 57,500 lb per axle line at 12 mph (26.1 t at 20 km/h) | 24,400 lb | 2-8 | 9' 10" |
| Goldhofer PST/SL-E | Self-propelled (SPMT) | 99,000 lb per axle line at 0.6 mph (45 t at 1 km/h) | 37,600 lb | 4, 6 or 8 | 9' 10" |
The arithmetic shows why. Goldhofer pictures a steel tower segment for an offshore wind turbine on a 22-axle THP/SL combination: 22 lines at 99,000 lb is 2,178,000 lb of axle rating at walking pace, while the modules themselves weigh about 167,750 lb (30,500 lb per 4 lines). That is our arithmetic, not a Goldhofer payload; the gooseneck (offered at 57,300 to 114,600 lb), the bridge or deck on top, the speed and the structures on the route set the real figure.
Speed costs capacity. The lighter THP/SL-L is rated 57,500 lb per axle line at 12 mph, and the self-propelled PST/SL-E adds electronic steering to 135 degrees either way and 40,400 lbf of traction per driven axle line. Each module is 9 ft 10 in wide, so even a single-width HMT is over the 102 in federal limit empty, and weights in the hundreds of thousands of pounds go past every routine permit: New York's Type 1 trip permit stops at 199,999 lb, and Texas treats loads over 254,300 lb as Super Heavy.
Superload review, route surveys and police escorts
Plan for three extra steps once a load needs one of these trailers: an engineering review of the bridges on the route, a route survey and police escorts. In New York, a Type 1S superload adds a police escort booked 2 business days ahead, municipal letters, a bond and, once the load is 14 ft or taller, a route survey with utility arrangements; the full list is in our New York superload rules.
Each state draws those lines in a different place, so compare the superload thresholds by state before fixing a date. Surveys, escorts and police details are priced on top of the haul, as the heavy equipment transport cost guide breaks down. Carriers that run perimeter, schnabel or modular equipment can join HTS through the carrier setup packet.
Specialized trailer questions
What is a perimeter trailer?
A trailer that carries its load on an outer frame instead of a full-width deck, so tall cargo sits low between the side rails. Trail King's TK160 perimeter expanding frame widens from 12 to 20 ft overall and is rated 160,000 lb uniform; XL's 130 and 180 DGX expandables cover the same 12 to 20 ft span. Closed, these frames are already too wide to run without a permit.
What is a schnabel trailer used for?
Loads stiff enough to carry themselves between two goosenecks, chiefly wind tower sections. Each gooseneck grips one end, so nothing sits under the middle of the load. Trail King rates each of its Gen 3 schnabel goosenecks at 85,000 lb, with towers that raise and lower the section and adapt to its flange diameter, and its 120 LPSD-HS steerable dolly can work in a schnabel setup.
Are there semi trailers longer than 53 feet?
Yes, on permits. Stretch trailers telescope well past 53 ft: XL's 80 FDE flatbed opens to 81 ft overall, its 80 SDE step deck's main deck to 62 ft 4 in, and the Trail King 80MED double drop's well to 59 ft 4 in. Each state sets its own semitrailer limit (48 ft in New York, or 53 ft on its qualifying highways; 59 ft in Texas), so an opened trailer travels on an over-length permit.
What is a hydraulic modular trailer?
A trailer assembled from axle-line modules with hydraulic suspension and multi-way steering, coupled to whatever length and width the load needs. Ratings are per axle line at a stated speed: Goldhofer's THP/SL carries 99,000 lb per line at 0.6 mph, and a 4-line module weighs 30,500 lb. Self-propelled versions (SPMTs) such as the PST/SL-E carry their own power packs, so no tractor is needed.
Do boosters increase a trailer's capacity?
No. XL says boosters "do not add to the capacity of the trailer". A booster adds axles and spread behind the trailer so weight comes off the trailer's own axles and each axle group stays within its permit limit. The trailer still has to be rated for the load, which is why Trail King builds the TKHDG-S at 160,000 lb overall and reinforces it for a tri-axle booster.
Who runs these trailers on an HTS load?
A carrier that owns them. HTS Logistics is a licensed broker (MC# 1178470) with no trucks or trailers of its own. For a perimeter, schnabel or modular move we find a carrier with the equipment and the experience, plan the permits, surveys and escorts with them, and quote the whole move. Carriers running this equipment can apply through our carrier setup packet.
