Heavy Haul Trailer Types and Deck Heights

Heavy Haul Trailer Types and Deck Heights

83 manufacturer models from 12 makers, with the tallest legal load on every deck

Quick answer

What are the types of heavy haul trailers?

Heavy haul trailers come in six main types: flatbeds, step decks, fixed-neck lowboys, RGNs (removable gooseneck lowboys), double drops and specialized rigs such as perimeter frames, schnabels and modular trailers. Across 83 manufacturer models, loaded decks run from about 58 in on a flatbed down to 12 in in a double drop's well, and each inch lower is an inch more legal load height.

Updated October 2026 by the HTS Logistics broker team (FMCSA MC# 1178470).

The figures below come from manufacturer spec sheets and product pages read on October 17, 2026: 83 trailer models from 12 makers, from Utility and Great Dane flatbeds to Trail King, Fontaine, Talbert, XL Specialized, Landoll and Eager Beaver lowboys. Deck heights are the makers' loaded figures unless a cell says otherwise. Where a maker's own pages disagree (Fontaine's Xcalibur deck heights, for one), we leave the figure out rather than pick one.

HTS Logistics is a licensed broker (MC# 1178470), not a carrier: we book carriers who own these trailers and match the deck to the load. The choice comes down to three facts about the load: how tall it stands on the deck against each state's legal height, what it weighs against the trailer's rating and the 80,000 lb gross limit, and whether it is driven on or lifted on.

Types of heavy haul trailers compared

Six families cover the 83 models. Loaded deck height falls from about 58 in on a flatbed to 12 in in a double drop's well, and maker ratings rise from 35–40 tons on step decks to 80 tons on the largest RGNs. Each family has its own guide, linked in the first column.

Specialized: perimeter, beam, schnabel, modular perimeter, beam and schnabel trailers Built around the load: expanding perimeter frames, steerable lowboys, schnabel goosenecks, steer dollies, hydraulic modular axle lines 14–17 in loaded, Trail King's steerable TKHD-S and TKHDG-S; Fontaine's beam-deck Magnitude 55H MBMD is 22 in Perimeter frames expand from 12 to 20 ft wide (Trail King TK160, XL 130 and 180 DGX) 12 ft 1 in to 12 ft 4 in 12 ft 7 in to 12 ft 10 in at 14 ft 85,000 lb per schnabel gooseneck; 160,000 lb uniform (TK160); 99,000 lb per modular axle line at 0.6 mph (Goldhofer THP/SL) Wind tower sections (schnabel), bridge beams and girders (steer dollies), and machines too tall or heavy for one deck, such as the Cat D10 (14 ft 3 in, 111,739 lb)

Ratings are printed three ways: concentrated over a stated length ("110,000 lb in 12 ft"), evenly distributed, or as a frame rating. None of them is a legal payload: axle and tire ratings, the 80,000 lb gross limit and the permit decide what the trailer may carry on the road. "Tallest legal load" is our arithmetic, legal height minus deck height, rounded down to the 1/4 in.

Deck height: which machines fit on which trailer

Deck height decides how tall a machine can be before the load passes 13 ft 6 in. We put 46 machines from our equipment data on seven deck heights the makers publish, from 58 3/16 in down to 12 in. Each row lists the machines that first stay legal at that deck, so a machine in the 34 in row also fits every lower deck, and the last column checks its weight against the example trailer's rating.

* Within 1 in of 13 ft 6 in. Air-ride height, deck deflection and blocking change the real figure, so we measure the loaded rig before treating it as legal height.

Heights are each machine's OEM transport height in the configuration our equipment data lists (the Cat D6 with blade and push arms off, the Cat 336 with boom, stick and bucket folded). Weights are the OEM shipping weight where published, otherwise operating weight. The Liebherr LTM 1100-5.2 all terrain crane is left out: it drives on its own axles.

Nine of the 46 machines are over 13 ft 6 in even on a 12 in deck, from the Cat 980 wheel loader (12 ft 7 in) to the Cat 992 (18 ft 3 in assembled). They travel under a height permit, in pieces, or both: Cat ships the D11 as a bare chassis, with the cab, blade, ripper and tracks as separate loads. Where 14 ft is legal (eight states, including California and Texas), the Cat 980 and the Link-Belt 100|RT fit a 15 in low-profile RGN (13 ft 9 3/4 in and 13 ft 10 in loaded) and the Deere 9RX 640 fits a 12 in double drop (13 ft 11 1/2 in loaded, within 1 in of 14 ft). California allows a load over 13 ft 6 in only on highways where the owner deems it safe (VC 35250).

Blade-off widths, shipping weights and permit checks for each machine are on the excavator transport, bulldozer transport and crane transport pages, with tractors on the tractor transport page and loaders, graders and haul trucks under construction equipment transport.

How to choose a heavy haul trailer: height, weight, loading

Work from the load as it will ship, with attachments that come off already off, and run three checks in this order. The first one rules out the most trailers.

1. Height: machine plus deck, against every state on the route

Add the machine's transport height to the trailer's loaded deck height and compare the total with the legal height in each state the load crosses: 13 ft 6 in in New York and 17 more of the 28 states we track, 14 ft in eight states, including California and Texas, and 14 ft 6 in in Colorado and Nebraska. A few inches of deck decide it. A Cat D8 stands 11 ft 7 in to the top of its antenna: 13 ft 7 in on a 24 in RGN, over the line, and 13 ft 3 in on a 20 in RGN, under it. The oversize load checker runs one load's width, height and weight against all 28 states at once.

2. Weight: the maker's rating is not the legal payload

Makers rate trailers for weight concentrated over a stated length: Trail King rates its TK110HDG for 110,000 lb in 12 ft and its TK80ACS step decks for 60,000 lb in 10 ft. The road limit is separate. On the Interstate the whole rig, tractor included, may weigh 80,000 lb, with 20,000 lb on a single axle and 34,000 lb on a tandem (23 CFR 658.17), and anything heavier needs each state's permit for a nondivisible load.

The trailer's own weight comes out of that 80,000 lb. Trail King's TK80ACS-34 step deck weighs 9,575 lb empty and Fontaine's Workhorse 50 RGN 18,720 lb, so the step deck leaves 9,145 lb more for cargo before the tractor is counted. For permit loads, carriers add flip axles, jeeps or boosters to spread the weight; XL Specialized notes that boosters "do not add to the capacity of the trailer." Axle spacing for a given rig can be checked with the Bridge Formula calculator.

3. Loading: driven on over the front, over the rear, or lifted on

  • Over the front: an RGN's neck comes off and the deck rests on the ground. Landoll's 855 uses "one hydraulic lever to fully detach and carry the neck away from the lower deck." Non-ground-bearing necks rest on the truck frame, so XL notes there is "no need to carry a 4 x 4 for blocking the neck."
  • Over the rear: a fixed-neck lowboy with a beavertail and ramps (Eager Beaver 25 and 35 GLB), a step deck with ramps, or a hydraulic or traveling tail. Published load angles run from 6.5° on Landoll's 440B traveling axle and 11° on its 930E with a 15 ft tail to 12.5° on Trail King's TK80HT and 15° on Talbert's 35HT. A lower angle helps machines with long overhangs or little ground clearance.
  • To a dock: the same tails lift. Trail King's TK80HT tail raises to 58 in dock height and Landoll's 930E lifts 24,000 lb to 53 in.
  • Lifted on by crane or forklift: crated, skidded or palletized freight goes on a flatbed or step deck. There is no neck to remove, and a 48 ft flatbed gives one level floor end to end.

Gooseneck dimensions on heavy haul trailers

On the lowboys below, the gooseneck runs from 10 ft 5 in (XL 80 HDG) to 23 ft 4 in including a flipbox (Fontaine Magnitude 80), and swing clearance from 86 in to 237 in. Swing clearance is the distance from the kingpin to the nearest part of the neck that can touch the tractor in a turn: a longer one fits a longer tractor but adds length. The kingpin setting is how far the kingpin sits back from the front of the trailer.

Overall length matters for the permit as much as the neck does. New York caps a semitrailer at 48 ft, or 53 ft on qualifying and access highways when the kingpin sits no more than 43 ft ahead of the rear axle (VTL 385(3)). The Trail King TK110HDG is already 52 ft 10 in and the XL 160 HDG 55 ft 10 in before a load goes on, so the route and the permit have to account for the trailer's length too.

Federal and state rules behind the limits

Four federal rules in 23 CFR 658, one securement rule in 49 CFR 393 and each state's height law set the numbers a trailer choice is measured against.

Federal and state size, weight and securement rules that limit heavy haul trailer loads
RuleWhat it setsWhat it means for the trailer
23 CFR 658.15 102 in (8 ft 6 in) width on the National Network; states may permit wider vehicles Anything wider than 102 in, whether the load, an outrigger or an optional 9 or 10 ft deck, travels on a width permit.
23 CFR 658.13 States must allow semitrailers of at least 48 ft (or their grandfathered length) on the National Network and may not cap a tractor-semitrailer's overall length there RGNs in our data run 44 ft 1 in (Trail King TK70HDG) to 57 ft 5 in (Fontaine Workhorse 55LCC) overall; state limits off the network still apply.
23 CFR 658.17 80,000 lb gross, 20,000 lb on a single axle, 34,000 lb on a tandem and the Bridge Formula on the Interstate; states may permit nondivisible loads beyond them An 80-ton rating does not raise the 80,000 lb gross; extra axles spread a permitted load.
23 CFR 658.5 A load is nondivisible if splitting it would compromise its use, destroy its value or take more than 8 work hours Parts that come off in less time may have to ship separately before a permit is issued.
FHWA size regulations No federal height limit; states set their own, most from 13 ft 6 in to 14 ft The deck height decides how tall the machine can be in each state.
NY VTL 385(2), 385(3) 13 1/2 ft including the load; semitrailers 48 ft, or 53 ft on qualifying and access highways with 43 ft or less from kingpin to rear axle On a 24 in RGN, 11 ft 6 in of machine is the most New York allows without a height permit.
CA VC 35250; TX Transp. Code 621.207 14 ft; California allows over 13 ft 6 in only on highways the owner deems safe, and Texas makes the operator responsible for clearance above 13 ft 6 in 6 more inches of machine on any deck, with the clearance check on the carrier.
49 CFR 393.130 Machinery of 10,000 lb or more: accessory equipment lowered and secured, articulation restrained, at least 4 tiedowns Applies on every trailer type: a lower deck does not change the tiedown count.

Width, height, length and weight limits for each state, with travel times and holiday rules, are on the legal load limits page, and permit steps state by state under oversize permits.

Shipping a machine, or running one of these trailers?

Shippers: send the make and model, or the shipping height, width and weight, with the pickup and delivery points. We compare the machine's height on each candidate deck with every state's limit on the route before we book RGN and lowboy trucking.

Carriers with RGNs, lowboys, step decks or double drops, $1 million in auto liability, $1 million in general liability and $100,000 in cargo coverage can haul heavy haul loads with HTS.

Heavy haul trailer questions

What are the three types of trailers?

For heavy equipment, think in three deck levels. A flatbed carries freight about 58 in off the road (Utility prints 58 3/16 in on a 47 in fifth wheel). A step deck drops its main deck to 34–40 in loaded. A lowboy puts the load lowest: 14–24 in on the RGNs we checked and 12 in in the lowest double drop well. Fixed-neck lowboys such as Eager Beaver's GLB series sit higher, at 32–43 in.

What is a heavy haul semi trailer?

A semitrailer built for loads past the legal limits for height, weight or both. The RGNs in our data carry the load 14–24 in off the road on 23–28 ft decks, with maker ratings of 35 to 80 tons and axles rated 25,000 lb each on the Trail King, Talbert, Eager Beaver, Landoll and Rogers models. Flip axles, jeeps and boosters add axles for permit weights. A standard flatbed rides about 58 in high.

What is the lowest deck height on a heavy haul trailer?

The lowest loaded deck height we found is 12 in, in the well of the Fontaine Renegade N12 and the XL 60 MFG mini-deck double drops. The lowest RGN is Trail King's steerable TKHD-S at 14 in loaded. Both 12 in trailers are rated 30 tons (60,000 lb), so the lowest decks are also among the lightest-rated. None of the 12 makers we checked publishes an unloaded deck height.

How tall can a load be on a heavy haul trailer?

Legal height minus the loaded deck height. Where the limit is 13 ft 6 in (New York and 17 other states we track), that leaves 8 ft 7 3/4 in on a 58 3/16 in flatbed, 10 ft 2 in to 10 ft 8 in on a step deck, 11 ft 6 in to 12 ft 4 in on an RGN and 12 ft 6 in in a 12 in double drop well. California and Texas and New Mexico and Utah and Arizona and Oklahoma and Missouri and Arkansas allow 14 ft. Taller loads need a height permit.

How much weight can a heavy haul trailer carry?

On paper, a lot: the RGNs we checked are rated from 70,000 lb in 12 ft (Trail King TK70HDG) to 160,000 lb in 10 ft (XL 160 HDG). On the road, federal rules cap the whole rig at 80,000 lb gross, 20,000 lb per single axle and 34,000 lb per tandem (23 CFR 658.17). Above that, each state issues an overweight permit for a nondivisible load, and the carrier adds axles to spread it.

How wide is a heavy haul trailer?

Standard decks are 8 ft 6 in (102 in), the federal width limit on the National Network (23 CFR 658.15). Makers also offer 9 ft decks (Fontaine Magnitude), 9 or 10 ft decks (Landoll 440B; Eager Beaver 55 GSL-3 at 108 or 120 in), outriggers that swing out 12 in (Talbert, Landoll) and perimeter frames that expand from 12 to 20 ft (Trail King TK160). Anything wider than 8 ft 6 in travels on a width permit.

Does HTS Logistics own heavy haul trailers?

No. HTS Logistics is a licensed property broker (MC 1178470, USDOT 3535360). We book carriers that run RGN, lowboy, step deck, double drop and flatbed trailers, match the deck height and rating to your load and route, and arrange the permits each state requires. The carriers we book hold at least $1 million auto liability, $1 million general liability and $100,000 cargo coverage.

Not sure which trailer your load needs?

Send the machine's make and model, or its shipping length, width, height and weight, plus pickup, delivery and dates. We check its height on each deck against every state's limit on the route and quote the deck that keeps it legal, or the permits it needs where none does.
