Scissor Lift & Boom Lift Transport
From a 4,729 lb Genie GS-2632 to a 59,900 lb JLG 1850SJ: transport positions, trailers and permits
Quick answer
How do you transport a scissor lift or boom lift?
On a step deck, in the maker's stowed or transport position. That way, every lift here is 8 ft 2 in wide or less (the big booms with axles retracted) and no taller than 10 ft 0 in, so none needs a width or height permit. Weight is the limit: the 135 to 185 ft booms weigh 46,900 to 59,900 lb and ride an RGN under an overweight permit.
Updated October 2026 by the HTS Logistics broker team (FMCSA MC# 1178470).
In our heavy equipment transport data, aerial lifts are easy on size and hard on weight. All nine lifts fit inside 8 ft 6 in once they are stowed for travel, but a 185 ft JLG 1850SJ weighs 59,900 lb, enough to need an overweight permit on its own, as JLG notes on its product page.
HTS Logistics, a licensed property broker (MC 1178470), books the carrier and orders any permit; the carrier loads and hauls the lift. Every figure here comes from Genie and JLG spec sheets and brochures checked in October 2026 and listed under Sources. Forklifts and telehandlers are covered in forklift and telehandler transport.
How to transport a scissor lift
Scissors are light and narrow, so the work is in stowing them and tying them down:
- 1
Lower the platform, and fold the rails if height is tight
Genie lists the GS-2632 at 7 ft 7 in stowed with the rails up and 6 ft 4 in with them lowered, and the GS-3369 RT at 8 ft 6 in and 6 ft 3.5 in. Rails up, both clear the 13 ft 6 in line on a 40 in step deck, at about 10 ft 11 in and 11 ft 10 in.
- 2
Check the tires
Genie's rough terrain heights assume RT tires; for turf or non-marking tires, it says to take 2 in off the stowed height.
- 3
Get it onto the deck
A lift that drives goes on over the step deck's ramps or tail. One that does not can be lifted: the GS-2632 comes with side and rear fork pockets as standard, so a forklift at either end can pick it up.
- 4
Tie it down at the maker's points
Genie builds tie-down and lifting points into the GS-2632. At 4,729 lb it is under the 10,000 lb line in 49 CFR 393.130, so the carrier may use that rule's four tiedowns or the general cargo rules; either way the tiedowns' working load limits must total at least half its weight, about 2,365 lb (393.106(d)).
Scissor and boom lift transport dimensions, 9 lifts
Lightest first. Booms are shown in the maker's storage or transport position (jib tucked under, axles retracted) where one is published, otherwise stowed; scissors with the rails up. Neither Genie nor JLG publishes a shipping weight, so weight is the lift's listed weight. Loaded heights are estimates: the lift's height plus a 40 in step deck or, for the three heaviest booms, a 2 ft RGN deck.

Two rows carry a caveat. JLG's 2026 spec sheet lists the 1850SJ at 9 ft 11.25 in (3.03 m) tall and its 2024 boom brochure at 10 ft (3.05 m); we use the newer sheet. And Genie publishes no separate jib-tucked height for the S-60 J, so its row carries the 8 ft 10 in stowed height.
Boom lift transport position: tuck the jib, retract the axles
Genie publishes two lengths for each of its booms: stowed, and storage/transport with the jib tucked under. Tucking the jib takes 5 ft 10 in off the Z-62/40 and 21 ft 3 in off the SX-135 XC, which is what gets a long boom onto a trailer deck. On the Z-62/40 it also adds 1 ft 2 in of height, still under 13 ft 6 in on a step deck.
| Lift | Stowed length | Transport length (jib tucked) | Width, axles retracted | Width, axles extended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Genie S-60 J | 31 ft 10 in | 23 ft 6 in | 8 ft 2 in | None listed |
| Genie Z-62/40 | 30 ft 3 in | 24 ft 5 in | 8 ft 2 in | None listed |
| Genie SX-135 XC | 64 ft 10 in | 43 ft 7 in | 8 ft 2 in | 12 ft 11 in |
| Genie SX-180 | 53 ft 1 in | 42 ft 8 in | 8 ft 2 in | 16 ft 6 in |
| JLG 1850SJ | 47 ft 9.5 in | Not published; stowed length used | 8 ft 2 in | 16 ft 6 in |
Retracted axles are what keep the big booms legal width. Extended, the SX-135 XC is 12 ft 11 in wide, past the first escort line in New York and Connecticut, and the SX-180 and 1850SJ are 16 ft 6 in, a superload by width in New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Ohio. Retracted, all three are 8 ft 2 in. A boom whose axles will not retract has to be repaired before pickup or permitted at its real width.
Which lifts are legal size but overweight?
The three big telescopic booms. The Genie SX-135 XC, Genie SX-180 and JLG 1850SJ are 8 ft 2 in wide with the axles retracted and about 11 ft 11 in to 12 ft 0 in high on a 2 ft deck, legal on both counts, but they weigh 46,900 to 59,900 lb. Our weight check assumes an empty tractor and RGN weigh 35,000 to 45,000 lb together, so more than 45,000 lb of cargo takes the gross past the 80,000 lb federal limit (23 CFR 658.17) and calls for an overweight permit. JLG says it outright for the 1850SJ: "No oversized permit is needed; an over weight permit is required for highway transportation projects."
The 60 ft class is legal on all three counts. The Genie S-60 J, JLG 600S, Genie Z-62/40 and JLG 600AJ weigh 16,650 to 22,691 lb. JLG's boom brochure, describing its articulating booms, adds "no oversized permits needed for even the largest Ultra Series boom."
None of the three comes near a superload by weight. On a tractor and RGN in that planning range, the 1850SJ grosses about 94,900 to 104,900 lb, under Ohio's 120,000 lb superload line and well under New York's 200,000 lb and Pennsylvania's 201,000 lb.
In New York the gross also sets the hours. An overweight-only load within 125% of legal weight (100,000 lb on an 80,000 lb gross limit) that keeps traffic speed may run around the clock, seven days a week, instead of only on weekdays in daylight. In that planning range the SX-135 XC (about 81,900 to 91,900 lb) and SX-180 (about 90,000 to 100,000 lb) stay inside it; the 1850SJ (about 94,900 to 104,900 lb) depends on the actual rig.
An overweight permit still comes from every state on the route. Our state-by-state oversize permit rules cover each permit system, the legal load limits table gives each state's gross limit (80,000 lb in most; New Mexico, Idaho, Montana, Washington and Wyoming publish higher figures tied to particular routes, axle spacings or grandfathered rules), and the oversize load checker takes a lift's loaded size and weight. At 8 ft 2 in wide, a stowed boom stays below the first width escort trigger in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Ohio; every state's triggers are on our pilot car requirements page.
Which trailer does a boom lift or scissor lift need?
Width, height on a 40 in step deck and weight sort the lifts:
| Trailer | Lifts in our data | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Step deck, or a flatbed with the rails folded where needed | Genie GS-2632 and Genie GS-3369 RT | 2 ft 8 in to 5 ft 9 in wide and 4,729 to 7,599 lb |
| Step deck | Genie S-60 J, JLG 600S, Genie Z-62/40 and JLG 600AJ | 8 ft 2 in wide, 16,650 to 22,691 lb and 23 ft 6 in to 29 ft 0 in long: inside a 38 ft lower deck |
| RGN or lowboy | Genie SX-135 XC, Genie SX-180 and JLG 1850SJ | Over 45,000 lb, so weight decides; 42 ft 8 in to 47 ft 10 in long |
Length is the catch on the big booms. At 42 ft 8 in to 47 ft 10 in in transport or stowed position, they are longer than the 38 ft lower deck of a 48 ft step deck, the 42 ft rear deck of Fontaine's 53 ft Revolution and the 23 to 28 ft decks of the RGNs in our trailer data. The carrier plans the load on its actual deck, with part of the machine over the upper deck, or on an extendable deck such as XL's 80 SDE, whose main deck stretches from 38 ft to 62 ft 4 in. On height alone, the SX-135 XC would ride at about 13 ft 4 in on a 40 in step deck.
A flatbed works for scissors when the height allows. On Utility's 58 3/16 in 4000S deck, a GS-3369 RT with its rails up rides at about 13 ft 4 in, just under 13 ft 6 in. A GS-4069 RT, 9 ft stowed with the rails up, would be about 13 ft 10 in, so its rails go down to 6 ft 10 in (about 11 ft 8 in loaded) to stay legal. The step deck trailer guide lists deck heights by model, and how RGN, lowboy and step deck trailers compare explains when each is used.
How many scissor lifts fit on one truck?
Weight runs out before deck space. By weight alone, seven GS-2632s (33,103 lb) stay under the 35,000 lb of cargo our weight check treats as legal on a standard tractor and trailer, and nine (42,561 lb) reach the borderline band below 45,000 lb. By width, three fit across 8 ft 6 in at 32.2 in each (96.6 in together), and the 3 ft 10 in GS-2646 fits two across. On a 38 ft lower deck, four rows of three would fit by footprint alone, 12 lifts, more than the weight allows. Genie gives no multi-unit loading guidance, so the carrier sets the layout.
Rough terrain scissors are heavier and wider. At 7,599 lb and 5 ft 9 in wide, four GS-3369 RTs (30,396 lb) stay under 35,000 lb, one across the deck.
Lifts that sit side by side and are held by tiedowns running across the deck must, under 49 CFR 393.106(c)(2), either touch each other or be kept from shifting toward each other in transit.
Tie-downs for boom lifts and heavier scissors
From 10,000 lb up, 49 CFR 393.130 applies in full. That takes in every boom here and the GS-4069 RT (10,392 lb, or 11,185 lb with outriggers), while its 7,599 lb GS-3369 RT sibling stays under the line. The rule wants accessory equipment "completely lowered and secured to the vehicle" and the machine "restrained against movement in the lateral, forward, rearward, and vertical direction using a minimum of four tiedowns."
Use the maker's points. JLG builds lifting and tie-down lugs into its articulating booms, and 393.130(c)(2) accepts mounting points designed for the purpose in place of the front and rear of the machine. The aggregate working load limit in 393.106(d) still applies on top: at least 29,950 lb of tiedown capacity for a 59,900 lb JLG 1850SJ, or 11,080 lb for a Genie Z-62/40.
What changes the cost of moving a lift?
The count and the weight. Several slab scissors can share one legal step deck load, so one truck is split across several machines. A 60 ft class boom, 23 ft 6 in to 29 ft 0 in long, takes up most of a 38 ft lower deck by itself. A 135 ft or larger boom adds an RGN or lowboy and an overweight permit from every state on the route.
The cost guide breaks a move into its parts, from linehaul and fuel to permits and escorts: see how heavy equipment transport cost is worked out. Lifts rented through Cat Rental or bought through Ritchie Bros or IronPlanet are picked up under the yard's release rules, as auction equipment transport explains, and lifts moving to a site alongside excavators or loaders are covered by construction equipment transport.

The details that move a lift off its spec-sheet numbers:
- Make, model and serial number. The GS-3369 RT and GS-4069 RT share a 10 ft 3 in length but differ by 2,793 lb.
- Tires (RT, turf or non-marking), tracks and outriggers. Genie's Z-62/40 TraX weighs 26,933 lb against 22,160 lb on tires.
- How many lifts are going, and whether they can travel together on one truck.
- Whether each lift runs and drives, and on the big booms whether the axles retract and the jib tucks.
- Pickup and delivery addresses, loading hours and who loads at each end, plus the release details for a rental return or an auction pickup.
Scissor lift and boom lift transport questions
How much does a scissor lift weigh?
In our data, 4,346 lb for a slab Genie GS-2646 up to 10,392 lb for a rough terrain GS-4069 RT. Genie lists the narrower GS-2632 as the heavier of its pair, 4,729 lb against 4,346 lb for the GS-2646, and options can take the GS-2632 to 4,900 lb. Outriggers add 753 lb to a GS-3369 RT.
Do boom lifts need an oversize permit?
Not for size, in our data. Stowed for travel, every boom here is 8 ft 2 in wide, with the axles retracted on the big ones, and 8 ft 2 in to 10 ft 0 in tall, so on a step deck or RGN it stays under 8 ft 6 in and 13 ft 6 in. The three over 45,000 lb, Genie's SX-135 XC and SX-180 and JLG's 1850SJ, need an overweight permit instead.
What is the transport position of a boom lift?
It is the maker's travel setup, and on Genie booms it means the jib tucked under. Genie publishes a storage/transport length for each: 23 ft 6 in for the S-60 J against 31 ft 10 in stowed, and 42 ft 8 in for the SX-180 against 53 ft 1 in. The big Genie and JLG booms also travel with their axles retracted, at 8 ft 2 in wide.
How many scissor lifts fit on a trailer?
By weight, about seven Genie GS-2632s (33,103 lb) on a legal load, or four GS-3369 RTs (30,396 lb). By width, three GS-2632s fit side by side inside 8 ft 6 in. The carrier sets the final count from its deck and tie-down points, and lifts placed side by side must be kept from shifting into each other.
Does a 185 ft boom lift need an escort?
Not for its size. The JLG 1850SJ is 8 ft 2 in wide with its axles retracted and 9 ft 11.25 in tall, about 11 ft 11 in on a 2 ft deck, under the width and height escort lines in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Ohio. It does need an overweight permit at 59,900 lb. With its axles extended it is 16 ft 6 in wide, which is why they are retracted for the road.
Do you move rental and auction lifts?
Yes. We arrange transport for lifts rented through Cat Rental or bought through Ritchie Bros or IronPlanet, between the yard and your site. Send the model, serial number and pickup details, and we check the lift against Genie's or JLG's published figures and confirm whether it needs a permit before we book the carrier.
