Lowboy Trailer Dimensions and Deck Heights

15 lowboys from 5 manufacturers, measured against 13 ft 6 in

Quick answer

What is a lowboy trailer?

A lowboy is a semitrailer whose main deck drops low between the gooseneck and the rear axles, so tall machines ride under the 13 ft 6 in height limit most states set. On the 15 lowboys we compared, the loaded deck sits 18 to 43 in off the ground, runs 18 to 29 ft long and carries a 25 to 80 ton rating.

What is a lowboy in trucking?

In trucking, a lowboy is the trailer for machines too tall for a flatbed or a step deck. A 48 ft flatbed stands about 58 in at the deck (Utility 4000S: 58 3/16 in on a 47 in fifth wheel), which leaves about 8 ft 8 in for the load under a 13 ft 6 in limit. The lowboys below leave 9 ft 11 in to 12 ft. Of the heavy haul trailer types, it is the one built around deck height.

The lowboy truck is the tractor, and a lowboy truck and trailer have to match: Fontaine's Workhorse 50 and Trail King's HDGs are built for a 50 in loaded fifth-wheel height, and Eager Beaver sells its fixed GLB necks in six lengths from 82 to 102 in. Lowboy trucking is the carrier work of loading, securing and hauling on one; HTS books those carriers and does not run trailers of its own.

Every lowboy here has a gooseneck, the raised front that rides on the tractor. How a machine gets on depends on the neck:

  • Fixed gooseneck. The neck is part of the frame, so the machine climbs a beavertail and ramps at the rear. Eager Beaver's 25 GLB and 35 GLB rate 25 and 35 tons on an 18 ft deck (19 to 25 ft optional) at 32 and 36 in loaded; the 3-axle 50 GLB-3 oilfield model rides at 43 in.
  • Fixed neck, double drop. The deck drops behind the neck and rises again over the axles, leaving a 29 ft main deck on Talbert's 30-55 FG (18 in loaded) and XL's 80 Double Drop (18 in, basis not stated). The double drop trailer guide covers the rest of that family.
  • Folding gooseneck. On XL's Hydraulic Folding Gooseneck, cylinders fold the front of the neck down at its hinge points into a front loading ramp, and the neck never leaves the trailer. XL rates it 100,000 lb in 10 ft on a 26 ft main deck.
  • Detachable gooseneck. The tractor pulls the unlocked neck away, the deck's front end comes down to the ground, and the machine climbs on from the front. Of the 15 models here, 9 work this way, at 20 to 24 in loaded (26 in on the XL 160 HDG, basis not stated). That design is the RGN trailer, and its detach and hookup steps have their own guide.

Lowboy trailer dimensions: 15 models compared

There is no standard lowboy size. Main decks run from 18 ft (Eager Beaver 25 GLB and 35 GLB) to 29 ft (Talbert 30-55 FG, XL 80 Double Drop), and overall length from 38 ft 11 in to 55 ft 10 in. All 11 models that publish a width are 8 ft 6 in (102 in). Ratings are concentrated over a stated length of deck, so compare the basis column, not just the tons.

Figures as each maker publishes them; "Not published" means the maker's page or sheet does not list it. Fontaine measures the Magnitude 80's 24 in at the main beams. Talbert prints no axle counts or overall lengths for these lowboys, and its 30-55 FG weight is the lightest build.

How tall is a lowboy trailer from the ground?

Loaded, the main deck of a detachable or double-drop lowboy sits 18 to 24 in off the ground on the models we compared, and a fixed-gooseneck lowboy sits 32 to 43 in. Under the deck there are 6 in of road clearance on the Talbert, Fontaine and XL 80 models and 8 in on the Trail King HDGs and the XL 160 HDG. These are the makers' loaded figures, the ones that count with a machine aboard; none of them publishes an empty deck height.

The deck is not the trailer's highest point. Over the rear axles the frame stands 36 in on the Talbert 35CC, 37 in at the bolsters and 41 in at the main beams on the Talbert 55SA, 40 in on Fontaine's Workhorse 50 and 50 5/8 in on the Magnitude 80, so anything that rides over the wheels starts from there. Up front, the neck sits on the tractor's fifth wheel at about 50 in.

The math is legal height minus deck height: 162 in less a 20 in deck leaves 142 in, or 11 ft 10 in, for the machine. Air-ride setting, deck deflection and blocking move the real number by inches, so a machine within 2 in of the line gets measured on the trailer before the move is permitted.

What fits on a lowboy under 13 ft 6 in?

We added each machine's OEM transport height to four published decks: Trail King's TK80ACS-34 step deck (34 in, the lowest step deck in our data), Eager Beaver's 35 GLB fixed-gooseneck lowboy (36 in), Talbert's 55SA detachable (20 in) and Talbert's 30-55 FG double drop (18 in). Totals are rounded up to the next inch.

Legal: 13 ft 6 in or less, the lowest limit we track, so legal in all 28 states. 14 ft states: over 13 ft 6 in but within 14 ft, legal only in 10 states, including California and Texas. 14 ft 6 in states: over 14 ft but within 14 ft 6 in, legal only in Colorado and Nebraska. Height permit: over 14 ft 6 in. Some states allow their higher limit only on designated highways. Height only; width, length and weight are separate checks. OEM heights describe a standard configuration, so measure the actual machine.

Of the 12 machines, 7 are over 13 ft 6 in on the step deck and legal on the 20 in detachable deck. The fixed-gooseneck lowboy is no help with height: at 36 in it sits 2 in above the step deck and puts a Komatsu D61PXi-24 at 14 ft, over the line in New York and legal only in the 10 states we track that allow 14 ft or more. On the Volvo A40 the last 2 in of deck decide it: 13 ft 7 in on the Talbert 55SA, 13 ft 5 in on the 30-55 FG.

The Cat 336 and Cat 980 are over 13 ft 6 in even on the 18 in deck. On XL's 15 in low-profile 110 HDGS the Cat 336 comes in at 13 ft 4 in. The Cat 980, 12 ft 7 in to the top of its ROPS, is over 13 ft 6 in on every deck in our data, so outside the states with higher limits it moves on a height permit. Shipping sizes by model are on our excavator transport and bulldozer transport pages, and in one boom and jib setup Manitowoc ships an MLC165-1 crawler crane in 9 trailer loads, starting with its 84,000 lb, 10 ft 6 in base unit (crane transport).

How much can a 55 ton lowboy haul?

On its frame, 110,000 lb concentrated on a short length of deck: Trail King rates the TK110HDG at 110,000 lb in 12 ft, and Talbert rates the 55SA at 110,000 lb in half its 25 ft deck. On the road without a permit it is much less, because the 80,000 lb federal gross limit includes the tractor and the trailer. The 55SA weighs 20,850 lb empty, which leaves 59,150 lb for the tractor, fuel, driver and machine together.

Axle limits come before the gross: 20,000 lb on a single axle and 34,000 lb on a tandem under 23 CFR 658.17, with the bridge formula for longer groups (run the spacing through our bridge formula calculator). Heavier loads need an overweight permit, which states issue only for nondivisible loads: ones that cannot be split without ruining their use or value, or that would take more than 8 workhours to dismantle (23 CFR 658.5).

The tons in a model name are not comparable across makers. Fontaine rates its Workhorse 50 at 50 tons in 12 ft and 52 tons in 16 ft; Eager Beaver lists the 35 GLB at 70,000 lb with no length basis and a GVWR of 82,295 lb; Talbert sells the 30-55 FG at full capacity evenly distributed. Capacity also costs payload: the 25-ton Eager Beaver 25 GLB weighs 11,600 lb and the 80-ton Fontaine Magnitude 80 37,620 lb. Past the 80-ton Magnitude 80 and XL 160 HDG, loads move to the multi-axle and modular designs in specialized heavy haul trailers.

When does a load need a lowboy instead of a step deck?

Height decides first. With the published decks above and a 13 ft 6 in limit:

  1. Up to 10 ft 8 in tall: a step deck can carry it if the weight fits. Trail King's TK80ACS-34 lower deck sits at 34 in loaded and leaves 128 in.
  2. 10 ft 8 in to 11 ft 6 in: any detachable lowboy in the table at 24 in or lower, which is all of them except the XL 160 HDG (26 in, basis not stated).
  3. 11 ft 6 in to 12 ft: every 2 in of deck matters. A 22 in deck (Talbert 35CC, 60SA) leaves 11 ft 8 in, a 20 in deck (Fontaine Workhorse 50, Talbert 55SA, XL 80 HDG) 11 ft 10 in, and the 18 in Talbert 30-55 FG 12 ft.
  4. Over 12 ft: no lowboy in the table keeps it at 13 ft 6 in. The options are a low-profile RGN at 12 to 15 in, a 12 in double drop such as Fontaine's Renegade N12, or a height permit. In states with a higher limit, every figure here gains 6 in at 14 ft and 12 in at 14 ft 6 in.
  5. Weight, whatever the height: Trail King and XL rate their step decks (TK80ACS, XL 80 SD) at 60,000 lb concentrated in 10 ft and 80,000 lb distributed, against 70,000 to 160,000 lb concentrated on the detachable lowboys here. A machine near the step deck's concentrated rating goes on a lowboy rated for it.

Width, weight and permits on a lowboy load

A lowboy's 8 ft 6 in (102 in) deck is exactly the federal width limit on the National Network (23 CFR 658.15), so a machine wider than the deck is a width-permit load. New York's statutory width is 96 in, with 102 in on qualifying and access highways (VTL 385). Outriggers carry the overhang: Talbert's 35CC and 55SA have 12 in swinging, removable outriggers, and Fontaine fits the Workhorse 50 with brackets for 12 pairs of swing-out outriggers and a hook-on pair.

Most machines in the fit table are wider than the deck before height comes into it: a Cat 320 ships 10 ft 5 in wide, a Cat D6 8 ft 10 in over its trunnions with the blade off, a Komatsu D61PXi-24 9 ft 10 in over its tracks. New York adds a certified escort over 12 ft wide; other states' escort lines are on our pilot car requirements page, and each state's permit office, fees and limits are under oversize permits by state.

On height, 18 of the 28 states we track set 13 ft 6 in; eight states, including California and Texas, allow 14 ft and Colorado and Nebraska allow 14 ft 6 in. Over 80,000 lb gross, or over an axle limit, the load moves on an overweight permit. The federal and state baselines are summarized in legal load limits.

Booking lowboy trucking through HTS

HTS Logistics is a licensed property broker (MC 1178470, USDOT 3535360), not a carrier: we book carriers that run the lowboy a machine needs and arrange its permits. To quote a lowboy load we need:

  1. Make, model and serial number, and what comes off for shipping (blade, bucket, counterweight, ROPS).
  2. Height and width measured in that shipping configuration, and the weight from the serial plate or a scale ticket.
  3. Pickup and delivery addresses, how the machine loads at each end, and the dates.

With those we match the deck to the height using the steps above, price permits and escorts state by state, and book the carrier. You can book lowboy trucking through our heavy haul page or the form below. Carriers with a lowboy and $1,000,000 auto liability, $1,000,000 general liability and $100,000 cargo coverage can haul lowboy loads with HTS.

Lowboy trailer questions

What is the standard length of a lowboy trailer?

There is no single standard. Overall length on the lowboys we compared runs from 38 ft 11 in (Eager Beaver 25 GLB and 35 GLB, with 18 ft decks) to 55 ft 10 in (XL 160 HDG, 28 ft deck). Four of the five detachable models that print a length fall between 44 ft 1 in (Trail King TK70HDG) and 52 ft 10 in (TK110HDG), with 24 to 26 ft of main deck.

How long is a 50 ton lowboy?

About 50 to 53 ft overall on the two 50-ton models that print a length. Fontaine's Workhorse 50 is 50 ft 1 in long with a 25 ft clear deck (24 ft optional) and a 20 in loaded deck height. Eager Beaver's 50 GLB-3 oilfield lowboy is 53 ft with its standard 102 in swing neck and rides at 43 in. XL's 100,000 lb folding-neck model has a 26 ft main deck, but XL does not print its overall length.

What is the difference between a lowboy and an RGN trailer?

The deck makes a trailer a lowboy; the neck makes it an RGN. A removable gooseneck comes off, which drops the deck's front end to the ground for drive-on loading, at 20 to 24 in loaded on the detachable models here. A fixed-gooseneck lowboy such as the Eager Beaver 35 GLB loads over a beavertail and rides at 36 in. Our RGN vs lowboy vs step deck comparison puts them side by side.

How much is a lowboy per mile?

Carriers price each lane, and we found no published market average for lowboy or RGN freight. The heavy equipment transport cost guide quotes one dispatch company's 2026 estimates: $3.50 to $6.00 a mile for a legal load, $5 to $8 oversize, and $8 to $15 when a load is both oversize and overweight. Permits, escorts and special crossings are billed on top of the linehaul.

What is the 60/40 rule for trailers?

We could not find a 60/40 rule in any manufacturer manual or federal rule we checked. What the makers say instead: Talbert's operator's manual tells you to distribute the load evenly front-to-rear and side-to-side and keep every tire, wheel and axle within its rating, and Landoll says its capacity figures are frame ratings that axle ratings (GAWR) and state and federal rules can lower. Axle weights, not a fixed split, decide where the machine sits.

Is a lowboy a gooseneck trailer?

Yes. Every semitrailer lowboy in our comparison has one: the neck that carries the front of the trailer on the tractor's fifth wheel. On Eager Beaver's GLB models it is fixed and comes in six lengths from 82 to 102 in; on XL's folding model it hinges down into a front ramp; on the nine detachable models it comes off, and those necks run 10 ft 5 in (XL 80 HDG) to 23 ft 4 in (Fontaine Magnitude 80, flipbox included).

How wide is a lowboy trailer?

8 ft 6 in (102 in) on all 11 lowboys in our comparison that publish a width, the same as the federal width limit on the National Network. Wider and narrower decks are options: Fontaine offers 9 ft on its Magnitude 80, and Eager Beaver offers the 25 GLB at 96 in. Wider machines ride on outriggers, such as the 12 in swinging, removable outriggers on Talbert's 35CC and 55SA.
