Tractor Transport and Hauling

Trailer choice by deck height, John Deere 8R and 9RX shipping sizes, and the permits each one needs

Quick answer

What kind of trailer do you need to haul a tractor?

Pick the trailer by height. Subtract the tractor's transport height from the legal limit (13 ft 6 in in most states, 14 ft in states such as California and Texas) and you get the highest deck that keeps the load legal. A John Deere 8R 410 stands 11 ft 8 in, so it needs a deck of 22 in or less: a low RGN or lowboy, not a step deck.

Updated October 2026 by the HTS Logistics broker team (FMCSA MC# 1178470).

HTS Logistics books tractor moves as part of our heavy equipment transport service. We are a licensed property broker (MC# 1178470) and own no trucks: the carrier we book brings the trailer and hauls the tractor, and we match its loaded deck height to your tractor, order the permits for each state on the route and track the load to delivery.

Three numbers settle most tractor moves: transport height, width and weight. The sections below run them for two current John Deere models and their common setups, from Deere's published figures. A crawler with a blade is a dozer (Caterpillar titles its D5 spec sheet "D5 Track-Type Tractor"), and those machines are covered on our bulldozer transport page.

Which trailer keeps a tractor under the height limit?

The one whose loaded deck height, added to the tractor's transport height, stays at or under the legal height: 13 ft 6 in in most states, 14 ft in eight states including California and Texas, and 14 ft 6 in in Colorado and Nebraska. Trailer makers publish loaded deck heights, and the table adds Deere's tractor heights to them.

Loaded height = Deere's transport height plus the manufacturer's published loaded deck height, rounded to the nearest inch. Air ride, deck deflection and blocking change the real figure, so the carrier measures before the permit is ordered.

Read the 8R 410 column first. It stays at legal height on any deck of 22 in or less, which in this table means the RGN (removable gooseneck) trailer decks from 14 to 20 in. A 24 in deck leaves it about 2 in over, and on a 34 to 39.5 in step deck it stands about 14 ft 6 in to 14 ft 11 in.

The 8RX 410 is measured to the top of its beacon (11 ft 11 in), so it needs 18 in of deck or less. The 9RX 640 is over 13 ft 6 in on every deck listed; it would need a deck no higher than 6 in. For that tractor the deck height decides the escorts, not the permit, as the state table below shows.

Deere measures the 8R 410 to the top of the cab, on the rear tires its brochure lists for that figure, so a beacon, GPS receiver or antenna above the cab adds to the 11 ft 8 in. Fold or remove them, or measure to the highest point before anyone books a deck.

Weight check: cargo up to 35,000 lb is legal against 80,000 lb gross with a 35,000 to 45,000 lb tractor and RGN (our estimate); 35,000 to 45,000 lb depends on the rig; above that an overweight permit is needed. Axle and bridge-formula limits are not modeled.

What changes a tractor's width and weight before it loads

Width first. Deere's 8R brochure gives the 8R 410 on 710/70R42 tires two overall widths: 2,602 mm (102.4 in) in the specification table and 2,550 mm (100.4 in) in the drawing caption. The legal limit is 102 in (23 CFR 658.15), so the published figures straddle the line, and we work from the tractor's measured width across the rear tires.

Those widths assume single tires. Deere publishes no width with duals, and the 8R offers rear tread settings up to 120 in and ILS front settings up to 144 in, which put the tire centers alone 10 ft and 12 ft apart. Plan on taking outer dual and triple wheels off before loading; left on, the width has to be measured and permitted as it stands.

Ballast is the weight swing. An 8R 410 is 28,000 lb in base trim and 44,100 lb at maximum ballast. On a tractor and RGN weighing 35,000 to 45,000 lb empty (our estimate for a 5-axle rig), the base tractor grosses 63,000 to 73,000 lb, under the 80,000 lb federal limit; fully ballasted it reaches 79,100 to 89,100 lb, where an overweight permit becomes likely. Pulling the front and wheel weights is common practice, not a Deere instruction.

The 9RX 640's 56,320 lb shipping weight already leaves out ballast, the PTO and the 3-point hitch, and it still grosses 91,320 to 101,320 lb on the same rig, so it moves overweight; at its 67,000 lb maximum ballast the figure is 102,000 to 112,000 lb. Its width follows the undercarriage: 9 ft 9 in on 30 in belts at 87 in spacing, 10 ft 3 in on 36 in belts, and at least 12 ft 6 in on the 120 in wide undercarriage (spacing plus belt width; Deere does not publish it). That last setup crosses the 12 ft line where New York, Connecticut and Florida add an escort.

The 8RX 410, the four-track version, is 9 ft 10 in wide on 30 in rear belts at 88 in spacing and weighs 43,300 lb in base trim, inside the 35,000 to 45,000 lb band where the need for an overweight permit depends on the actual rig and axle spacing.

One tractor, two decks: the 9RX 640 state by state

A 9RX 640 needs a height permit in every state we track, because it stands over 14 ft on every deck in the table, and a width permit at 9 ft 9 in, though that width is under every state's escort line. The deck changes the escort count. On the 14 in deck of a Trail King TKHD-S it stands about 14 ft 1 in; on a 24 in deck, about 14 ft 11 in.

Heights only; the 9 ft 9 in width needs a permit everywhere but no escort. Height rules transcribed from each state's official sources (checked October 2026); the issued permit controls.

Ohio shows the stakes: no height escort at 14 ft 1 in, but two escorts and coordination with the owners of overhead signs, signals and utilities at 14 ft 11 in. The full conditions are in our Ohio oversize permit rules and Pennsylvania oversize permit rules.

On the New York State Thruway, loads 13 ft 7 in to 16 ft high may use only the section from the Pennsylvania line to Shortman Road (TAP-623), so a 9RX 640 crossing New York travels NYSDOT routes on a NYSDOT permit. Massachusetts publishes escort triggers only for the Turnpike and Boston's Metropolitan Highway System, so we confirm its height requirements on the permit itself.

What is the most cost-effective way to ship a tractor?

Ship the smallest load the tractor allows, on the lowest deck that clears the height lines on your route, on days the permits allow travel. In order:

  1. Strip it to transport trim. Outer duals and ballast off, beacon and antennas folded: on an 8R 410 that is the difference between a legal-weight load and one that may need an overweight permit.
  2. Match the deck to the route. A 22 in deck keeps an 8R 410 at legal height in every state we track, and an 18 in deck keeps a 9RX 640 under the 14 ft 6 in escort lines of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois and Florida.
  3. Pick dates the permits allow. New York permits oversize travel Monday to Friday in daylight, and Saturday mornings only for loads within 12 ft wide, 85 ft long and legal height, so an over-height tractor that misses Friday waits for Monday.
  4. Price the pieces, not just the total. Our guide to the cost to ship a tractor and other machines splits a quote into linehaul, fuel, permits, escorts and crossings, with dated benchmarks.

To test a different tractor against all 28 states we cover, enter its loaded width, height and weight in the oversize load checker.

Imported tractors: container or Ro-Ro?

Size also decides how an imported tractor reaches the U.S. In 2025, 0.2% of the vessel value of imported tractors rated 18 to 37 kW arrived outside containers, against 92.5% for tractors over 130 kW, the class an 8R 410 (410 PS, about 302 kW) belongs to. Baltimore led U.S. imports of non-road tractors with $976M, 23.9% of the national total (Census port data).

The Port of New York and New Jersey took $82.8M of non-road tractors in 2025, with 95.1% of the vessel value in containers, and January to August 2026 imports ran 53.8% ahead of the same months of 2025. A containerized tractor leaves Port Newark and Elizabeth on a container dray; one landed Ro-Ro is a lowboy pickup at the terminal, covered on our Ro-Ro and breakbulk machinery pickup page.

Tractor transport questions

How much does it cost to haul a tractor?

The carrier's rate per mile times the miles, plus fuel, permits and any escorts, so the tractor's size class drives the price. An 8R 410 on a deck of 22 in or less needs no height permit or escorts. A 9RX 640 always needs width and height permits, and on a 24 in deck it needs escorts in New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois and Florida. New York's single-trip permit is a flat $40.

Can you haul a tractor on a flatbed or step deck?

Yes, if it is short enough. A flatbed deck rides about 58 in high loaded (XL Specialized's 80 FDE), so a tractor taller than 8 ft 8 in goes over 13 ft 6 in. A step deck's main deck runs 34 to 40 in loaded in the manufacturer specs we checked, which allows a tractor of 10 ft 2 in to 10 ft 8 in. An 8R 410, at 11 ft 8 in, needs an RGN or lowboy.

Does a John Deere 8R need an oversize permit?

Sometimes for width and height, rarely for weight. Deere prints the 8R 410's width as both 100.4 in and 102.4 in in the same brochure, against a 102 in limit, so the measured tractor decides. At 11 ft 8 in to the cab top it is legal height on a deck of 22 in or less. Its 28,000 lb base weight keeps the gross under 80,000 lb on a 5-axle rig of up to 45,000 lb.

How do you tie down a tractor for transport?

Federal securement rules for machinery of 10,000 lb or more name tractors specifically (49 CFR 393.130). The tractor must be restrained against lateral, forward, rearward and vertical movement with at least four tiedowns, fixed as close as practicable to its front and rear or to mounting points built for the purpose, and accessory equipment such as a loader must be fully lowered and secured.

Is a crawler tractor the same as a bulldozer?

When it has a blade, yes. Caterpillar calls its dozers track-type tractors and titles the D5's spec sheet 'D5 Track-Type Tractor Technical Specifications'. Those moves turn on blade-off widths and shipping weights, which our bulldozer transport page covers model by model. Rubber-track farm tractors such as the 8RX 410 and 9RX 640 are covered on this page.

Can you move a tractor from the port?

Yes, and the port leg depends on how it shipped. Compact tractors almost always arrive in containers (99.8% of 2025 vessel value for tractors rated 18 to 37 kW), which means a container dray from the terminal. Tractors over 130 kW mostly arrive Ro-Ro (92.5%), so the pickup is a lowboy at the Ro-Ro terminal, with oversize permits from the first mile.
