Farm Equipment Hauling and Combine Transport
Combines, headers and 4WD tractors: what comes off, what each state requires and how harvest dates shape the move
Quick answer
How do you haul a combine?
Break it into loads: the header comes off and rides its own trailer, the unloading auger and grain-tank extensions fold, and outer duals come off. A John Deere S790 is then 12 ft 11 in wide, 49,141 lb and about 15 ft 4 in tall on a 2 ft RGN deck, which means oversize and overweight permits everywhere, and escorts in 9 of the 11 states in the table below.
Updated October 2026 by the HTS Logistics broker team (FMCSA MC# 1178470).
HTS Logistics books combine, header and tractor moves for dealers, farms and buyers as part of our heavy equipment transport service. We are a licensed broker (MC# 1178470): a carrier with the right trailer hauls each piece, and we order the permits and escorts for every state on the route and plan pickup around your harvest or planting dates.
What comes off a combine before it is hauled
Deere's operator's manual for the S790 starts its trailer procedure with "Remove header and outside dual wheels (if equipped)" and tells operators to avoid public roads with the header attached whenever possible. The rest of the manual's list:
- Grain tank extensions folded and covers closed; folding the extensions lowers overall height by 0.5 m (1 ft 6 in).
- Unloading auger folded to its transport position and locked; clean grain loading auger lowered.
- Cab ladder swung fully forward to narrow the machine; on single-tire machines the light bracket, cab handrail and ladder landing come off for trailer transport.
- Radio antenna folded down.
For the Case IH Axial-Flow 8250 the list is the same in substance: header off, outer dual drive tires off if fitted (Case IH publishes the width for single tires only), grain tank extensions folded and the unloading auger stowed. Case IH offers two folding-auger options on the 250 series, which in its words "provide easier transport and storage."
The duals decide the permit class. On the widest front-tire setup in Deere's table the S790 measures 16 ft 4 in, over the 16 ft line where New York and Pennsylvania classify a load as a superload, and New York adds a police escort and a $10,000 width bond. On its narrowest front tires it is 12 ft 11 in and moves on a routine permit.
Moving the S790's successor, the S7 900? Deere lists the same 49,141 lb base weight but no transport dimensions, and the S7 uses the X9 cab, so the S790's heights may not carry over. Measure it before booking.
Combine and tractor transport sizes
Transport figures as the manufacturers publish them, header off. The loaded column adds the 2 ft deck height our estimates assume for an RGN (removable gooseneck) trailer or lowboy; deck-by-deck figures for the tractors are on our tractor transport page.

Sources: Deere operator's manual OMHXE122585 and 8 and 9 Series brochures; Case IH Axial-Flow 250 and 260 Series brochures. The dataset rates its confidence in these four records as medium; confirm the serial-plate weight and measured dimensions before a permit is ordered.
Even the lowest loaded deck height we found in trailer makers' specs, 12 in on a Fontaine Renegade N12 double drop, leaves an S790 at about 14 ft 4 in. Plan every S790 move for the rules that start at 14 ft: a height-pole escort in New York and the utility notice in New Jersey.
Imported combines usually start at a Ro-Ro terminal rather than a container yard; the port side of that move is on our Ro-Ro and breakbulk machinery pickup page.
Headers ride on their own trailer
Every header in the table is wider than 8 ft 6 in, even Deere's CF 12 corn head folded to 16 ft, so the header is a load of its own with its own dimensions on the permit application.
| Header | Published width | What the figure measures |
|---|---|---|
| John Deere RDF 45 rigid draper | 47 ft 11 in | Transport width, field position |
| John Deere HDF 50 draper | 52 ft 11 in | Platform length (50.1 ft cutterbar) |
| John Deere HDF 45 / HDR 45 | 47 ft 10 in | Platform length |

Header widths from deere.com spec data and Case IH header brochures, as recorded in our equipment dataset. We have not checked which header fits which combine serial number.
Loaded lengthwise, a header's published width becomes its length on the trailer: a 47 ft 11 in RDF 45 needs a deck that long, and its depth and height, which Deere does not publish, set the permit width and height. Case IH lists the FD245 by cutting width alone. Measure the header as it will travel and send those three numbers with the combine's.
Price the header as its own load. Our heavy equipment transport cost guide shows how linehaul, fuel, permits and escorts add up for each piece, with dated figures.
What each state requires for a combine 13 ft wide and 15 ft tall
The S790 and Axial-Flow 8250 ship at 12 ft 11 in to 13 ft 0 in wide and, on a 2 ft deck, about 15 ft 1 in to 15 ft 4 in high. The table applies each state's width and height triggers to that envelope. They are listed separately; the permit sets how they combine, for example whether one front escort can carry the height pole. To run another machine against all 28 states we cover, use the oversize load checker.
| State | Legal height | Width (13 ft) | Height (about 15 ft 4 in) | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New York | 13 ft 6 in | Certified escort: front on two-lane roads, rear on wider roads | Certified front escort with a height pole; the route survey must clear overhead objects by 3 in | NYS Escort Manual 2025; 17 NYCRR 154-1.8; 17 NYCRR 154-1.2(u) |
| New Jersey | 13 ft 6 in | Permit, no escort | Utility notice plus a route survey attached to the application | N.J.A.C. 13:18-1.12(d); NJDOT SUPERLOAD bulletin |
| Pennsylvania | 13 ft 6 in | Permit, no escort (pilot car over 13 ft) | Lead pilot car with a height pole, utilities notified 24 hours ahead, and a route survey (Form M-936ARS) | 67 Pa. Code 179.10(13)(i)(C) |
| Connecticut | 13 ft 6 in | 1 escort: rear on divided highways, front on undivided | Front pole car (it can serve as the front escort) | CTDOT OS/OW FAQ; RCSA 14-270-21 |
| Massachusetts | 13 ft 6 in | Mass Pike and Boston highway system: 1 pilot car following | Permit; no official statewide height escort rule found (we confirm on the permit) | 700 CMR 7.07(4)(d) |
| California | 14 ft | 1 pilot car on yellow, green and blue routes; 2 on brown | Permit, no escort | Caltrans single-trip pilot car map legend |
| Florida | 13 ft 6 in | 1 qualified escort (2 on lanes under 12 ft, bridges under 30 ft wide and busy roads) | 1 escort ahead with a non-conductive height pole set 6 in above the load | F.A.C. 14-26.012(7); F.A.C. 14-26.012(8)(b) |
| Georgia | 13 ft 6 in | Front escort plus "Rear Escort/Amber Lights" on 2-lane roads; rear escort on 4-lane roads; "Rear Escort/Amber Lights" only on limited-access highways | Permit, no escort (front escort with height sensor at 15 ft 6 in) | Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. 672-2-.06(3)(c)3 |
| Illinois | 13 ft 6 in | Permit, no escort | 1 civilian escort, the lead carrying a height pole | IDOT OPER 993; 92 Ill. Adm. Code 554.408(k) |
| Ohio | 13 ft 6 in | Permit, no escort (lead escort over 13 ft) | 2 escorts (lead and rear), and the move is coordinated with owners of overhead signs, signals and utilities | ODOT OS-1A |
| Texas | 14 ft | Permit, no escort | Permit, no escort | No escort yet: escort over 14 ft wide (43 TAC 219.11(k)(2)); height-pole escort over 17 ft high (43 TAC 219.11(k)(4)(A)) |
9 of 11 states require at least one escort for this envelope (in Massachusetts, on the Turnpike). Rules transcribed from official state sources checked October 2026; the issued permit controls.
Connecticut's next line is close: at 15 ft 4 in or more it adds State Police front and rear. An S790 on a 2 ft deck comes within a fraction of an inch of it, so a lower deck or a measured height settles the escort plan there.
Toll roads add their own limits. In 2026 the Ohio Turnpike takes nothing over 13 ft 6 in high or 10 ft wide anywhere on the road (a construction restriction through sunrise Jan 2, 2027), so a combine crosses Ohio on ODOT routes. On the Illinois Tollway, anything over 12 ft wide is a Tollway superload, with a $150 permit and at least 3 business days' notice on top of the IDOT permit. See our Ohio oversize permit rules and Illinois oversize permit rules.
Harvest and planting dates: when a permitted combine can move
A permit only allows travel on the days and hours its state sets, and harvest season runs into the holiday bans. Thanksgiving week is the tightest: Pennsylvania holds oversize loads from 12 noon Wednesday, Nov 25, 2026 until sunrise Monday, Nov 30, and Connecticut until daylight that Monday, while New York, Ohio and Illinois reopen on Friday, Nov 27 (New York half an hour before sunrise).
Wide loads lose weekend hours as well. Ohio bars loads over 12 ft wide from 3 PM Saturday and 3 PM Sunday until half an hour before the next sunrise, and from April 1 through November 30 also from 3 PM Friday, a window that covers planting and harvest. New York allows no Sunday travel and opens Saturday mornings only to loads within 12 ft wide and legal height, which rules out a combine.
Illinois sorts loads by size: up to 14 ft 6 in wide and 15 ft high they may move seven days a week in daylight; up to 16 ft wide and 17 ft high, Sunday is out and Saturday ends at noon (IDOT OPER 993). On a 24 in deck both combines are over 15 ft (about 15 ft 1 in and 15 ft 4 in). An Axial-Flow 8250 qualifies for seven-day travel on a deck of 23 in or less, an S790 on 20 in or less.
Daylight is defined differently, too. Connecticut and Georgia allow travel from half an hour after sunrise to half an hour before sunset; New York, Ohio and Texas from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset. On the same November day that leaves a Connecticut move 2 hours shorter than a New York one.
Spring moves meet posted roads. Pennsylvania and its municipalities post seasonal weight limits, most often in early spring, and an oversize permit does not override them; Ohio can cut legal weights by up to 25% on state highways and 50% on county roads during thaws; Illinois counties and townships can restrict roads for up to 90 days a year; New York towns can bar vehicles over 4 tons from town highways once signs are posted. Farm equipment hauling questions
How much does it cost to haul a combine?
Price it as two loads, the combine and its header, each at the carrier's per-mile rate plus fuel, permits and escorts. Escorts are the swing item: a combine 13 ft wide and 15 ft tall on the trailer needs at least one in 9 of the 11 states in our escort table, and Ohio requires two once the load is over 14 ft 10 in high. Our heavy equipment transport cost guide prices each of those pieces with dated sources.
Can you haul a combine with the header on?
Avoid it. Deere's operator's manual says to keep the header off public roads whenever possible, and the sizes explain why: Deere's RDF 45 draper is 47 ft 11 in wide in field position and its CR 16 corn head is 40 ft 4 in. The combine and header go as two pieces, each with its own measured dimensions on the permit.
How wide is a combine without the header?
It depends on the tires. Deere lists the S790's front-tire width range as 12 ft 11 in to 16 ft 4 in. Case IH gives the Axial-Flow 8250 as 13 ft 0 in on single tires at 120 in tread; its European brochure shows 11 ft 5 in on the narrowest tires or 610 mm tracks and 13 ft 7 in on the widest single-tire combination. Dual tires add more.
What happens if rain delays the pickup?
The permit's clock keeps running. A New York trip permit covers 5 permissible hauling days and allows one amendment, which can extend it once by up to 5 more days for $10. Connecticut's single-trip permit runs over three days, Georgia's 10 days not counting Sundays and holidays, and Florida's 10 days. In New Jersey, changing the dates after issue takes a new application and fees.
Do farm machines get a permit exemption?
Not a combine on a trailer, in the 11 states in our escort table. Florida lists oversize-only farm and forestry equipment among its permit-fee exemptions (F.A.C. 14-26.009). Illinois exempts over-width-only implements of husbandry from its holiday ban, but a loaded combine is over height too. Illinois' free harvest permits, Sept 1 to Dec 31, cover divisible agricultural loads, and a combine is nondivisible.
Can you haul a self-propelled sprayer?
Yes, under the same rules: booms folded, tank empty, and the measured width and height decide the permits. Spray mix weighs about what water does, 8.34 lb a gallon, so 100 gallons left in the tank adds roughly 834 lb. Our OEM data covers combines and tractors, not sprayers, so we work from the model, boom size and tire setup you send.
Can you pick up an imported combine at the port?
Yes. Combines mostly arrive Ro-Ro: 92.9% of the $144.0M in combine harvester-thresher imports that came by sea in 2025 arrived outside containers (Census, HS 8433.51). The first leg is then a lowboy pickup at the Ro-Ro terminal, with oversize permits from the gate, once customs and the ocean carrier have released the machine.
