Double Drop Trailer: Dimensions, Well Height and Capacity
Well lengths, loaded deck heights and ratings from 11 manufacturer models, checked October 2026
Quick answer
What is a double drop trailer?
A double drop trailer drops behind the gooseneck and rises again over the rear axles, leaving a low well between the two. The 11 manufacturer models on this page have 29-34 ft wells at 12-22 in loaded deck height, which leaves room for cargo 11 ft 8 in to 12 ft 6 in tall under a 13 ft 6 in limit. Makers rate them at 30-55 tons.

What are double drop trailers?
Of all the heavy haul trailer types, the double drop is the lowboy shaped for height. Its deck steps down behind the gooseneck into a well, then climbs back up over the axles. On the Fontaine Renegade N18 the well is 29 ft of clear deck at 18 in loaded height, while the rear bogie platform over the axles sits at 40 in, so the well is the only part of the trailer low enough for tall freight. The whole trailer is 50 ft 1 in long and 102 in wide.
Three published numbers decide whether a load fits: the well length, the loaded well height and the capacity rating with the basis the maker states. This page compares all three for 11 models from Fontaine, Talbert, Trail King and XL Specialized, read from the makers' own pages in October 2026.
HTS Logistics is a licensed property broker (MC# 1178470) and does not own trailers. For a double drop move we book a carrier whose trailer matches the load's height, length and weight, then arrange the permits around it. To ship a tall machine now, book low-deck heavy haul trucking.

Well (clear deck) length, loaded deck height and ground clearance are as each maker prints them; overall length and width are for the closed trailer. "Not published" means the maker does not print the figure, and we have not estimated it.

*Talbert's page prints the concentrated length as "10 in. 0 ft."; confirm it on the build sheet of the actual trailer. Talbert lists 30 to 55 ton builds on one page and an empty weight "starting at" its lightest build.
These capacities are the makers' structural ratings, not legal payloads. Fontaine prints "GAWR and tire ratings determine legal loads" next to every Renegade rating, and the bases differ: the Renegade N18 is rated 40 tons evenly distributed, the Renegade 20 40 tons in a 16 ft length, and the Trail King 80MED 60,000 lb in 10 ft with its deck closed. Compare a machine against a concentrated rating whose length is no longer than the machine's footprint.
Across the published figures, closed trailers run 47 ft 11 in (Renegade 20) to 53 ft (Renegade N12) overall, every published deck is 8 ft 6 in wide, and empty weights run from 15,880 lb (Renegade 20) to 22,490 lb (Renegade XN20), with Talbert listing builds from 14,920 lb.
How high is a double drop trailer?
The well rides 12 to 22 in off the road when loaded, with 4 to 8 in of ground clearance under it. The ends sit much higher: the Renegade N18's rear bogie platform is at 40 in and the Trail King 80MED's loaded fifth wheel at 49 in. None of these makers publishes an empty (unloaded) deck height, so every figure here is loaded.
Legal cargo height is the height limit minus the well height. There is no federal height limit; New York sets 13 ft 6 in (VTL 385(2)), and California, Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas allow 14 ft, each measured from the road to the top of the load. Both of those states leave clearance above 13 ft 6 in to the operator: California allows such a load only on highways the owner deems safe (VC 35250), so the route check comes before the extra 6 in.
| Loaded well height | Models | Tallest cargo at 13' 6" | Tallest cargo at 14' |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 in | Renegade N12, XL 60 MFGM | 12' 6" | 13' 0" |
| 18 in | Renegade N18, Talbert 30-55 FG, Talbert 30-55 HRG, XL 80 Double Drop*, XL 80 MFG | 12' 0" | 12' 6" |
| 20 in | Renegade 20, Renegade XN20 | 11' 10" | 12' 4" |
| 22 in | Trail King 80MED, Talbert 30-55 Extendable | 11' 8" | 12' 2" |
*XL does not say whether its 18 in figure is loaded or empty. Cargo heights are our arithmetic, not manufacturer figures.
Treat the result as a ceiling. Air-ride height, deck deflection, blocking under the load and tarps all change the real number, and the bridges on the route set the rest. When a load comes within an inch of the limit, have it measured on the trailer before the permit is ordered.
What fits in the well under 13 ft 6 in?
We ran the shipping height of every machine in our equipment data against the published well heights. The table keeps the 17 machines that ride over 13 ft 6 in even on the lowest published step deck (34 in, Trail King TK80ACS-34) and are short enough, at 34 ft or less, to sit in a well. Figures are inches to spare (+) or over (−) at 13 ft 6 in.

*Longer than a 29 ft well. The last column counts the 9 models with a published well length and height; the XL 60 MFGM and Talbert 30-55 Extendable are left out because their well lengths are not published. Heights and lengths are the OEM transport figures in our equipment data, rounded to the half inch: usually blade-off for dozers, and to the top of the cab with the bucket on the ground for loaders. Not shown: 16 machines that already clear 13 ft 6 in on a 34 in step deck, and 14 taller ones longer than 34 ft as shipped, mostly excavators, cranes and articulated trucks.
Take the Cat D8. Cat ships it at 76,126 lb with the ripper on and lists it 11 ft 7 in tall. On a 34 in step deck it would ride at 14 ft 5 in, and on a 24 in RGN deck such as the Trail King TK110HDG at 13 ft 7 in. In the 20 in well of a Fontaine Renegade 20 it rides at 13 ft 3 in, legal in New York with 3 in to spare. That Renegade's rating, 40 tons (80,000 lb) in 16 ft, is above the dozer's weight; the XL 80 MFG's 70,000 lb in 16 ft is 6,126 lb short, and the 30-ton models are 16,126 lb short. Add the Renegade's 15,880 lb and the dozer and trailer come to 92,006 lb before the tractor is counted, so the move still needs an overweight permit, with its axle groups checked on the Bridge Formula calculator. Our Cat D8 and other dozer shipping specs show what comes off before loading.
Length rules out loads too. The Cat 140, Cat 160, John Deere 744 P-Tier, Cat 966 (by 0.5 in), Komatsu WA500-8 and Cat 980 are longer than a 29 ft well, so they need the Renegade N12's 32 ft 11 in well, the 80MED's 34 ft or a stretch model. The Komatsu WA500-8 shows the squeeze: at 12 ft 5 in tall and 32 ft 7.5 in long, the only model with a published well that takes it is the N12, with 1 in to spare in height and 3.5 in in length. But the N12 is rated 30 tons in 16 ft and Komatsu lists the loader at 78,619 lb, so it needs a heavier-rated low deck, and its permit plan starts from that trailer's deck height.
None of the 3 rough terrain cranes in our data goes in a well. The Grove RT765E-2, Link-Belt 100|RT and Tadano GR-1000XL-4 measure 44 ft 8 in to 50 ft 7 in long and 88,450 to 92,210 lb, longer than every closed well and heavier than the 80,000 lb ratings of the 40-ton models; see rough terrain crane shipping for how those move.
Removable gooseneck or fixed neck?
The neck decides how the load gets into the well. On a detachable (removable gooseneck) double drop the neck comes off, the front of the deck goes down to the ground and a machine drives on over the front, the way an RGN trailer loads. A fixed neck stays on, so nothing drives on over the front. The rule we work by: if the machine has to drive on, book a detachable neck; a fixed neck suits freight that is lifted in.
- Fixed: Talbert 30-55 FG, XL 80 Double Drop.
- Hydraulic detachable: Fontaine Renegade N18, Fontaine Renegade N12, Fontaine Renegade XN20, Talbert 30-55 HRG.
- Mechanical detachable: Fontaine Renegade 20, Trail King 80MED, Talbert 30-55 Extendable, XL 80 MFG, XL 60 MFGM (mini-deck).
Hydraulic necks lift and lower on the truck's wet kit or a motor, and Fontaine's narrow N-series necks are non-ground-bearing, so a detached neck rests on the truck frame instead of on blocking. Mechanical necks weigh less: the mechanical Renegade 20 comes in at 15,880 lb against 17,240 lb for the hydraulic Renegade N18 with the same 29 ft well, a 1,360 lb difference that becomes cargo allowance on a legal-weight load (the Renegade 20's well sits 2 in higher). Trail King builds the 80MED to take interchangeable mechanical or hydraulic necks.
Check the neck against the tractor too. Swing clearance, from the kingpin to the nearest part of the neck that can touch the tractor in a turn, runs from 80 in (Talbert 30-55 Extendable) to 102 in (Renegade N18 and Renegade XN20) on these models; a longer clearance fits a longer tractor but adds length. Whatever the neck, a machine of 10,000 lb or more rides with its blade or bucket lowered and secured, its articulation restrained and at least four tiedowns (49 CFR 393.130).
Single drop vs double drop: what is the difference?
A single drop (step deck) drops once, behind its upper deck, and runs its lower deck over the axles. That trades height for length: conventional step decks in our data carry the lower deck at 34 to 40 in loaded, 12 to 28 in higher than a 12 to 22 in well, but the lower deck of a 48 ft step deck such as the XL 80 SD runs 38 ft against 29 to 34 ft of well. Under 13 ft 6 in that is 10 ft 2 in to 10 ft 8 in of cargo height on a step deck trailer, against 11 ft 8 in to 12 ft 6 in in a well. A flatbed trailer with a 58 in loaded deck, such as the XL 80 FDE, leaves 8 ft 8 in.
The decision rule that falls out: freight under 10 ft 2 in tall that needs deck length goes on a step deck, and a load between 10 ft 8 in and 12 ft 6 in tall that fits in 29 to 34 ft needs a well. Step decks also load over the rear on beavertails or ramps, while a well loads over a detached neck or by crane.
Against a lowboy the line is blurrier, because a double drop is one. Fontaine's own page describes the Renegade N18 as a "Narrow Hydraulic gooseneck lowbed trailer". The RGN-style lowboys in our data have shorter decks than a double drop's well, 23 to 28 ft at 14 to 24 in loaded, and higher ratings, up to 80 tons. The lowboy trailer guide covers those decks, and our lowboy vs double drop and RGN comparison lines the numbers up.
Extendable (stretch) double drops
A stretch double drop slides its well open for long loads. The Fontaine Renegade XN20 opens from 29 ft to 50 ft, and the Trail King 80MED from 34 ft to 59 ft 4 in; Talbert's 30-55 Extendable is 48 ft overall closed as a tandem, with its open length not published.
The extension costs weight and height. Against the Renegade N18, the XN20 carries 5,250 lb more empty weight (22,490 lb) and a well 2 in higher (20 in). Ratings change basis as well: Trail King rates the 80MED at 60,000 lb in 10 ft with the deck closed.
Opened, the trailer alone is past legal length. New York caps a semitrailer at 48 ft, or 53 ft on qualifying highways (VTL 385(3)), and requires a certified escort at 80 ft or longer. A fully open 80MED adds 25 ft 4 in to its 52 ft 11 in closed length, about 78 ft 3 in, so with any tractor in front the combination passes 80 ft. Stretch flatbeds, step decks and RGNs, and the perimeter and schnabel trailers beyond them, are on our specialized heavy haul trailers page.
Every one of these permit lines adds cost, from the height permit to the escorts; the heavy equipment transport cost guide shows how they stack on the haul. Carriers that run double drops can join HTS through the carrier setup packet.
Double drop trailer questions
What is a double drop trailer used for?
Tall machines and equipment that fit inside a 29 to 34 ft well. In our height table that includes the Cat D8 and Komatsu D155AX-8 dozers, the Cat 950 wheel loader and the John Deere 8R 410 tractor. Each rides over 13 ft 6 in on the lowest published step deck but stays legal in a 12 to 22 in well. Freight that needs deck length more than height goes on a step deck instead.
How tall can a load be on a double drop trailer?
Subtract the loaded well height from the height limit. With wells of 12 to 22 in, cargo can be 11 ft 8 in to 12 ft 6 in tall under New York's 13 ft 6 in limit, or 12 ft 2 in to 13 ft where 14 ft is legal, as in California, Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas. Ride height, blocking and low bridges on the route can cut that, so measure a tight load on the trailer itself.
How long is a double drop trailer?
The closed trailers in our data measure 47 ft 11 in (Fontaine Renegade 20) to 53 ft (Fontaine Renegade N12) overall, and every published width is 8 ft 6 in. The well is 29 ft on most models, 32 ft 11 in on the Renegade N12 and 34 ft on the Trail King 80MED. Stretch models open to 50 ft (Renegade XN20) and 59 ft 4 in (80MED).
How much weight can a double drop carry?
Makers rate the 11 models here at 30 to 55 tons, on different bases: evenly distributed, concentrated in 16 ft or in 10 ft. Those are structural ratings, not legal payloads. On a legal move the trailer's own 15,880 to 22,490 lb and the tractor count against the 80,000 lb federal gross limit (23 CFR 658.17), and anything heavier moves on an overweight permit.
What is the difference between a lowboy trailer and a double drop trailer?
A double drop is one form of lowboy, with its well between a raised neck and a raised axle platform. Next to the RGN-style lowboys in our data, double drop wells are longer (29 to 34 ft against 23 to 28 ft of deck) but rated lower (30 to 55 tons against up to 80 tons). Our RGN, lowboy and step deck comparison sets the numbers side by side.
Can you drive a machine onto a double drop?
Only if the neck comes off. Detachable double drops, such as the hydraulic Fontaine Renegade N18 or the mechanical Renegade 20 and XL 80 MFG, set the front of the deck on the ground so a machine drives on over the front. Fixed-neck models like the XL 80 Double Drop and Talbert 30-55 FG keep the neck attached, so book one of those only for freight that can be lifted in by crane or forklift.
Does HTS have double drop trailers?
No. HTS Logistics is a licensed freight broker (MC# 1178470), not a carrier. For each move we book a carrier whose double drop suits the load's height, length and weight, arrange the permits and escorts, and follow the load to delivery. Carriers that run double drops can apply through our carrier setup packet.
