Flatbed Trailer Dimensions and Deck Height
48 and 53 ft flatbeds from 9 manufacturer models, and the machines that ride legal on one
Quick answer
What are standard flatbed trailer dimensions?
A standard flatbed semitrailer is 48 or 53 ft long and 102 in (8 ft 6 in) wide, with its deck about 58 in up. Utility publishes 58 3/16 in for its 48 ft models on a 47 in fifth wheel, so a load can stand 8 ft 7 13/16 in tall in a 13 ft 6 in state and 9 ft 1 13/16 in where 14 ft is legal.
Updated October 2026 by the HTS Logistics broker team (FMCSA MC# 1178470).
For equipment, a flatbed's limit is height: its deck sits about 18 in above a step deck's lower deck, so it runs out of legal height first. HTS Logistics is a licensed property broker (MC# 1178470) that books carriers for machinery and oversize loads, and the flatbed is one of the heavy haul trailer types we match machines to. Every trailer figure below is quoted from a maker's page or spec sheet as of October 2026.
Standard flatbed trailer dimensions from 9 manufacturer models
Makers sell flatbed semitrailers at 45, 48 and 53 ft (Great Dane also lists a 28 ft trailer). Of these nine, only Utility publishes a width and a deck height. Ratings run 80,000 to 100,000 lb distributed and 50,000 to 72,000 lb concentrated, and the concentrated figure is the one to read for a machine that puts its weight on a short footprint.
| Model | Build | Lengths | Width | Deck height | Distributed rating | Concentrated rating | Trailer weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Utility 4000S | Steel, spring tandem | 48 ft | 102 in | 58 3/16 inon a 47 in fifth wheel; not labeled loaded | 80,000 lb | 57,000 lb single coil | not listed |
| Utility 4000AE | Aluminum/steel combo, air ride | 48 ft | 102 in | 58 3/16 inon a 47 in fifth wheel; not labeled loaded | 80,000 lb | 47,000 lb single coil | not listed |
| Fontaine Revolution 52 | Aluminum, tandem | 45, 48 or 53 ft | not listed | not listed | 80,000 lb | 52,000 lb in 4 ft | 8,348 lb (aluminum wheels) |
| Fontaine Revolution 60 tridem | Aluminum, tridem | not listed | not listed | not listed | 80,000 lb | 60,000 lb in 4 ft | 10,270 lb (aluminum wheels) |
| Great Dane Freedom Combo | Steel/aluminum combo | 45, 48 or 53 ft | not listed | not listed | 80,000 lb | 50,000 lb in 4 ft | not listed |
| Great Dane Freedom Steel | Steel | 28, 45, 48 or 53 ft; extendable to 90 ft | not listed | not listed | 80,000 lb | 50,000 lb in 4 ft | not listed |
| Great Dane Freedom Ultra | Aluminum | not listed | not listed | not listed | not listed | Up to 72,000 lb | not listed |
| East Beast (BST) | Aluminum | Up to 53 ft | not listed | not listed | 90,000 lb | 52,000 lb in 4 ft; 60,000 lb in 10 ft | not listed |
| East Beast II (BST II) | Aluminum | Up to 53 ft | not listed | not listed | 100,000 lb | 65,000 lb in 4 ft; 72,000 lb in 10 ft | not listed |
"Not listed" means the maker doesn't publish it; Great Dane's deck heights, widths and weights sit behind an email form. Utility rates both of its models at a 73,000 lb GVWR and publishes single-coil ratings instead of a concentrated figure. East's ratings are for a 48 ft wide-spread tandem.
How wide is a flatbed trailer?
102 in, which is also the federal width limit: states may set neither a lower nor a higher limit for the National Network (23 CFR 658.15), and anything wider needs an oversize permit. Utility lists 102 in overall width for both its 48 ft flatbeds.
New York is narrower off the main network. Its base limit is 96 in, with 102 in allowed on Qualifying and Access Highways and, outside New York City, on roads with lanes at least 10 ft wide (VTL 385(1)). Inside the city that lane exception doesn't apply, so New York City streets stay at 8 ft except for STAA trailers on named routes.
With equipment, the trailer is rarely the widest thing on it. A Cat D3 is 9 ft 2 in wide with its blade on and 6 ft 11 in with it off, and Deere's 550 P-Tier blade measures 8 ft 9 in straight but 8 ft 1 in fully angled, inside the limit. New York won't issue a permit for any load that can be reduced to legal size (NYSDOT PERM 30), so expect to remove or angle what you can. Escorts start well above the permit line, over 12 ft wide in New York; the rest are on pilot car requirements by state, and the permits themselves on oversize permits by state.
What is the standard deck height of a flatbed trailer?
About 58 in. Utility publishes 58 3/16 in for its steel 4000S and combo 4000AE, measured on a tractor with a 47 in fifth wheel, and XL Specialized lists a 58 in loaded deck for its 80 FDE extendable flatbed. Fontaine, Great Dane and East publish no flatbed deck height on their pages, and none of the makers publishes one for a 53 ft model.
Max height on a flatbed
Subtract the deck from the legal height: 162 in minus 58 3/16 in leaves 8 ft 7 13/16 in of load height in New York and the other 13 ft 6 in states, and 168 in leaves 9 ft 1 13/16 in in California, Texas and the other 14 ft states we track. That is 17 15/16 in less than the 10 ft 1 3/4 in available on a 40 1/4 in step deck, which is why taller machines move to one; see step deck trailer dimensions.
Treat those figures as ceilings. Utility doesn't say whether its 58 3/16 in is loaded or unloaded, Trail King builds its step decks for a 48 to 50 in fifth wheel against Utility's 47 in reference, and blocking under a machine adds height, so measure the loaded height after the machine is chained down.
Which machines ride a flatbed under 13 ft 6 in?
Compact track loaders and mini excavators do; nothing in our data taller than the 8 ft 4 in minis does. The table runs 12 machines from the OEM data behind our equipment pages against Utility's 58 3/16 in deck and, for the ones that don't fit, against a 40 1/4 in step deck. Only 4 of the 12 ride legal on the flatbed.

Heights and widths are OEM transport figures, with the configuration under each width. A machine's weight is its OEM shipping weight if the maker publishes one; if not, its operating weight. Loaded heights are derived (machine height plus deck height), checked October 2026.
In shipping position, the Cat 305 CR and 308 CR mini excavators clear 13 ft 6 in by 3.4 in and 3.7 in. The Cat D3 is where the flatbed stops: at 9 ft 1 in it rides at 13 ft 11.1 in, 5.1 in over New York's limit and only 0.9 in under the 14 ft limit in California and Texas, while the same dozer rides at 12 ft 5.2 in on a step deck.
Tractors, graders and wheel loaders are past even the step deck. The Deere 8R 410 (11 ft 8 in to the top of the cab), the Cat 140 grader and the Cat 950 loader (11 ft 4 in each) need a double drop or RGN; see tractor transport and construction equipment transport. Combines stand 13 ft 1 in to 13 ft 4 in with the header off (it rides its own trailer), which puts them over 13 ft 6 in even on the lowest 12 in deck in our data; see farm equipment transport. Excavator shipping sizes, minis included, are on excavator transport, and the oversize load checker shows which states your own machine's dimensions trip.
Flatbed or step deck: four checks before you book
- Height. Up to 8 ft 7 13/16 in (9 ft 1 13/16 in in 14 ft states), a flatbed works. Up to 10 ft 1 3/4 in, every step deck we found works; up to 10 ft 8 in, a 34 in low step deck. Taller than that, a double drop trailer or an RGN trailer.
- Deck length at one height. Utility's 4000S is a straight 48 ft deck. A 48 ft step deck keeps 38 ft at the low height and puts 10 to 11 ft up front, so a load longer than 38 ft that also needs the low height has to bridge two levels.
- Loading. Nothing drives onto a 58 in deck without a dock, a crane, a forklift or portable ramps. Step decks come with rear ramp options from beavertails to hydraulic bi-fold ramps (XL), or with hydraulic tails that lower to the ground.
- Weight on the footprint. Compare a dense machine with the concentrated rating (50,000 to 65,000 lb in 4 ft on these flatbeds), not the 80,000 lb distributed one.
Deck heights, ratings and loading for flatbeds, step decks and RGNs are side by side in flatbed vs step deck vs RGN.
Flatbed weight limits: rating versus legal payload
A flatbed's rating is not its legal payload. The trailers above are rated 80,000 to 100,000 lb distributed, but federal law caps the loaded rig (tractor, trailer and load together) at 80,000 lb with 34,000 lb on a tandem (23 CFR 658.17). Utility rates the 4000S and 4000AE at a 73,000 lb GVWR although their mainbeams are rated for 80,000 lb evenly distributed, and Fontaine's Revolution brochure notes that legal load ratings depend on regulations, axle ratings (GAWR) and tire ratings.
Trailer weight comes straight off the payload. The tandem Revolution 52 weighs 8,348 lb, which leaves 71,652 lb for the tractor and the load; the tridem Revolution 60 weighs 10,270 lb, 1,922 lb more, and is rated 60,000 lb in 4 ft against 52,000 lb.
For a dense machine, the concentrated rating matters more than either. East rates its Beast at 52,000 lb in 4 ft and the Beast II at 65,000 lb, and Great Dane's Freedom Ultra goes up to 72,000 lb. Utility's coil ratings show the steel-versus-combo gap: 57,000 lb for a single coil on the steel 4000S, 47,000 lb on the combo 4000AE.
Axle limits differ by state: New York allows 22,400 lb on a single axle and 36,000 lb on a tandem, and Florida publishes 22,000 and 44,000 lb with its 10% scale tolerance included. To check a specific rig, use the Bridge Formula calculator.
How much overhang can you have on a 48 foot trailer?
Each state sets its own number. Take a 56 ft load on a 48 ft flatbed, loaded flush at the front so 8 ft hangs off the back:
| State or road | What 8 ft of rear overhang means | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Texas | Over the 4 ft legal rear overhang (3 ft at the front), so it needs a permit. A rear escort starts past 20 ft, and 30 ft is the cap without a TxDOT exception. | Transp. Code 621.206; 43 TAC 219.11 |
| New York (NYSDOT) | Allowed on a trip permit: rear overhang may reach one third of the load's length (18 ft 8 in here) with two thirds on the deck. An escort is required past 10 ft. | NYSDOT PERM 30; Escort Manual 2025 |
| NYS Thruway | Needs a Thruway permit, which starts at 4 ft of overhang. | Thruway TAP-623 |
| Pennsylvania | No pilot car until the load extends more than 15 ft past the rear. | 67 Pa. Code 179.10(13) |
| Florida | Permit loads are limited to 10 ft of rear overhang at night. | F.A.C. 14-26.012 |
| Connecticut | No pilot car until the overhang passes 25 ft from the last visible support. | RCSA 14-270-21(e) |
| California | Pilot car past 25 ft, with the rear measured from the last point of support; front overhang is capped at 30 ft. | Caltrans TPM 502.6 |
Overhang counts toward overall length as well, so a long one can also trip a length escort (80 ft or more in New York). The same rules apply on a step deck. For the size limits in each state we track, see legal load limits by state.
Securing a machine on a flatbed
Every machine in the table above weighs more than 10,000 lb (the Bobcat T770 is the lightest at 10,515 lb), so the federal heavy-equipment rule applies (49 CFR 393.130). Accessory equipment must be completely lowered and secured (the rule's example is a hydraulic shovel), articulated machines must be kept from articulating, and the machine must be held against movement in every direction by at least four tiedowns, as close to its front and rear as practicable.
The small machines come with anchor points: Cat lists tie-downs on the 305 CR's track frame, tie-down eyes on the 308 CR's and six tie-down points on the 299D3. The load also must not shift enough to affect the truck's stability or steering (49 CFR 393.100(c)).
How long is a flatbed truck and trailer?
For a tractor pulling a flatbed semitrailer, federal rules set no overall length on the National Network (23 CFR 658.13), so the trailer's 48 or 53 ft is the number that counts. New York is stricter off its Qualifying and Access Highways, where a combination is held to 65 ft, and New York City caps one at 55 ft. A straight flatbed truck, with the bed on its own chassis, is limited to 40 ft in New York (load and bumpers included) and Florida and to 45 ft in Texas.
A 53 ft trailer also has to meet each state's kingpin rule: 43 ft from kingpin to rear axle in New York, 41 ft in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, 40 ft on California's STAA routes. Sliding axles are how makers handle it: on Fontaine's 53 ft Infinity SuperiorSlide the kingpin-to-rear-axle distance adjusts in 6 in steps from 36 ft 3 in to 42 ft 3 in.
Extendable (stretch) flatbeds
A load that outgrows 48 or 53 ft goes on an extendable flatbed, which slides open. XL's 80 FDE goes from 48 ft to 81 ft with a 58 in loaded deck, rated 80,000 lb overall and 60,000 lb in 10 ft closed. Fontaine's Xcalibur XTP4880SA2 opens from 48 to 80 ft on two axles, and Great Dane offers its Freedom Steel extendable to 90 ft. We leave the Xcalibur's deck height out because Fontaine's page lists two figures that disagree.
Stretch decks are heavy: the Xcalibur weighs 17,244 lb, 8,896 lb more than the aluminum Revolution 52, and opened to 80 ft it is over the semitrailer length limit in every state we track (the longest is Texas at 59.5 ft), so plan on a permit. Stretch trailers, along with beam and perimeter designs, are covered in specialized heavy haul trailers.
Booking a flatbed equipment load
Give us the machine and the two addresses. A make and model is enough to start; measured dimensions and the serial number tighten the quote. We check its loaded height on the carrier's deck against every state on the route, say which trailer it needs if a flatbed is too tall, and book a flatbed or step deck carrier. Miles, permits and escorts set the price; see the heavy equipment transport cost guide for worked examples.
Carriers with their own authority and a flatbed or step deck can haul flatbed equipment loads with HTS once the carrier packet is complete.
Flatbed questions
How wide is an 18 wheeler flatbed?
8 ft 6 in, or 102 in. That is the width Utility lists for its 48 ft flatbeds and the federal limit on the National Network (23 CFR 658.15). Off its Qualifying and Access Highways, New York's base limit is 96 in (VTL 385(1)), which is also the limit on most New York City streets, so the route matters even for a legal-width trailer. Any load wider than 8 ft 6 in needs an oversize permit.
What are the dimensions of a 40 ft flatbed trailer?
None of the flatbeds we checked is built at 40 ft: Great Dane lists 28, 45, 48 and 53 ft, Fontaine 45, 48 and 53 ft, and East up to 53 ft. Whatever the length, the legal width is 102 in, and the only published flatbed deck height, Utility's 58 3/16 in on its 48 ft models, leaves 8 ft 7 13/16 in of load height under 13 ft 6 in.
How much does a flatbed trailer weigh?
The makers we checked publish weights only for aluminum flatbeds: 8,348 lb for Fontaine's tandem Revolution 52 and 10,270 lb for its tridem Revolution 60, both with aluminum wheels. Utility, Great Dane and East don't publish steel or combo flatbed weights. Extendables weigh far more: Fontaine's 48 to 80 ft Xcalibur XTP4880SA2 is 17,244 lb.
What is the weight limit on a 53 ft flatbed?
The same as on a 48 ft one: 80,000 lb for the whole rig under federal rules, with 20,000 lb on a single axle and 34,000 lb on a tandem, subject to the Bridge Formula (23 CFR 658.17). The longer trailer doesn't raise that cap. Heavier loads that can't be broken down need an overweight permit and, usually, more axles under them.
Can a mini excavator or track loader ride on a flatbed?
Yes, the ones in our data fit under 13 ft 6 in. In shipping position on a 58 3/16 in deck, Cat's 305 CR rides at 13 ft 2.6 in and the 308 CR at 13 ft 2.3 in; the Bobcat T770 and Cat 299D3 track loaders ride at 11 ft 7.4 in and 11 ft 9.8 in. All four are under 8 ft 6 in wide and 20,771 lb or lighter.
When does a wide flatbed load need an escort?
When it passes the state's escort width, which sits well above the 8 ft 6 in permit line: over 12 ft in New York and Connecticut, over 13 ft in Pennsylvania and over 14 ft in New Jersey and Texas. Height and length carry their own triggers; New York, for example, also requires an escort at 80 ft long or 14 ft high.
Does HTS run its own flatbeds?
No. We're brokers: HTS Logistics has held FMCSA broker authority (MC 1178470) since February 2021 and keeps a $75,000 BMC-84 bond on file. We book flatbed and step deck carriers for equipment and oversize loads, check each load against the carrier's trailer and the route, and arrange the permits and escorts it needs.
