Oklahoma Oversize and Overweight Permits
ODOT Size and Weight permits in OkiePROS, certified escort tiers, Interstate curfews, turnpike approval and high-wide corridors
Quick answer
How are Oklahoma oversize permit fees calculated?
ODOT charges $40 for an oversize single trip and $40 plus $10 for each 1,000 lb over legal for an overweight one; a load that is both pays $80 plus the per-1,000 lb charge, since combined permits are priced as two (47 O.S. 14-116; OAC 730:50-5-3). Card payments add 4%. Permits come from OkiePROS or the permit line, 405-425-7012.
Updated October 2026 by the HTS Logistics broker team (FMCSA MC# 1178470).
Checked October 2026; the issued permit controls
Oklahoma's legal semitrailer, 59 ft 6 in on the National Network plus 5 miles of access, ties Louisiana's for the longest in our oversize permits by state guide and in the federal grandfather list (23 CFR 658 Appendix B). Off the Interstate, legal gross is 90,000 lb rather than 80,000 lb (47 O.S. 14-101(E)), still subject to the bridge formula, so a combination whose axle spacing supports it can gross up to 90,000 lb on a state highway with no overweight permit.
Permits moved from the Department of Public Safety to ODOT's Size and Weight Permit Division on July 1, 2022 (HB 4008), and the rules were rewritten as OAC 730:50, last amended July 13, 2026. On heavy haul freight into Oklahoma, HTS works as the broker (MC 1178470): we order the OkiePROS permit for the carrier we book and, past 12 ft wide, escorts whose drivers hold ODOT certification. ODOT wants a company profile, with a copy of the submitter's driver's license, on file before the first permit.
Legal limits in Oklahoma
Oklahoma uses two heights: 14 ft on turnpikes, Interstates, US and state highways and 13 ft 6 in on county roads (47 O.S. 14-103(B)), even though ODOT's permit FAQ still says anything over 13 ft 6 in needs a permit. Operators over 13 ft 6 in are liable for damage to overhead structures, so the lower figure governs any county-road leg; our legal load limits guide sets these heights beside the 13 ft 6 in used in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois.
| Limit | Oklahoma | Federal baseline | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Width | 8 ft 6 in | 8 ft 6 in (102 in) on the National Network | Excludes tire bulge, safety devices and load pins that keep overall width within 9 ft (14-103(A)) |
| Height | 14 ft | No federal limit | 13 ft 6 in on county roads; ODOT's FAQ asks for a permit over 13 ft 6 in |
| Semitrailer length | 59 ft 6 in | States must allow at least 48 ft | On the National Network plus 5 miles of access; 53 ft off the network; no overall tractor-semitrailer limit; 70 ft for other combinations |
| Gross weight | 80,000 lb | 80,000 lb | 90,000 lb off the Interstate (14-101(E)); vehicles are registered for at least the weight carried |
| Single axle | 20,000 lb | 20,000 lb | 21,600 lb with an annual variance permit for listed bulk, oilfield and farm commodities off the Interstate |
| Tandem axle | 34,000 lb | 34,000 lb | Gross follows the federal bridge chart through 9 axles (OHP Troop S) |
Federal baseline: 23 CFR Part 658, eCFR as of 2026-10-14
When Oklahoma requires a permit and how to get one
ODOT's Size and Weight Permit Division in Oklahoma City issues permits under 47 O.S. 14-116 and 14-118, online in OkiePROS, by phone or at offices in Oklahoma City, Enid, Elk City and Tulsa that keep the same hours. A single-trip permit lasts up to 5 consecutive calendar days, and OkiePROS auto-approves a route that hits no restrictions while sending any other to review.
Overweight requests must reach ODOT at least 5 working days before the move, more when several bridges are involved (OAC 730:50-5-1(5)). Permits are not revised to change the load description or dimensions, other revisions are discretionary and limited to one per permit, and one suspension of up to 2 weeks is allowed for weather or a breakdown. A run from Texas through Oklahoma to Kansas on I-35 needs each state's permit unless a regional permit agreement covers the load (47 O.S. 14-118.1), and our guide to how oversize permits work explains how a multi-state move is permitted.

Fees
| Permit | Fee |
|---|---|
| Single trip or monthly, oversize | $40 |
| Single trip or monthly, overweight | $40 plus $10 per 1,000 lb over the legal limit |
| Oversize and overweight | $80 plus $10 per 1,000 lb over legal |
| Multi-trip | $40 per month, $480 maximum for 12 months |
| Special Movement, manufactured items over 16 ft and up to 23 ft wide | $500 on top of the regular fee |
| Annual Envelope (to 12 ft wide, 14 ft high, 110 ft, 120,000 lb) | $4,000 |
| Special Over-height Trailer Permit for Limited Travel | $40 single trip, $500 for 30 days, $2,000 a year |
| Faxed or emailed permit | $2 |
| Credit card | 4% of the charge |
A load 30,000 lb over legal on a single trip, for example, pays $40 plus 30 × $10, or $340, and $380 if it is also oversize ($80 + $300). ODOT's schedule lists no superload, bridge-analysis or engineering fee; Highway Patrol escorts are billed at their full cost (14-120.2), and monthly billing accounts need a surety bond of at least $5,000.
Escort and pilot car rules in Oklahoma
Oklahoma certifies escort drivers: every for-hire escort holds an ODOT escort vehicle operator certification from the Oklahoma State University CEAT course and exam, renewed every 5 years (47 O.S. 14-120.1; OAC 730:50-5-17), and our page on escort certification rules in other states shows who else does. The tiers below are the amended rule in force since July 13, 2026.
| Load | Escort requirement |
|---|---|
| More than 12 ft wide, through 14 ft | 1 front escort on two-lane and super two-lane highways, 1 rear on multi-lane highways; the statute requires escorts over 12 ft on every highway, Interstates included (14-120.1) |
| More than 14 ft wide, through 16 ft | Front and rear on two-lane and super two-lane highways; 1 rear on multi-lane highways |
| More than 16 ft wide | Front and rear on all roads, with no Interstate on any part of the trip (730:50-5-6(a)(3)) |
| 15 ft 9 in high or more | Front and rear escorts, a non-conductive height pole on the escort, and every utility and railroad on the route contacted beforehand |
| Longer than 90 ft overall | 1 front escort on two-lane and super two-lane highways (the trigger was 80 ft before July 13, 2026) |
| Longer than 100 ft overall | Front and rear on two-lane and super two-lane highways |
| Superloads, such as loads in excess of 20 ft (the escort contract's wording) | An OHP Troop S escort under a DPS contract: the application (form 14054LD) goes to [email protected], the contract usually takes 5–7 working days, and Troop S says the whole process can take 2–4 weeks |
| Convoys | Not allowed for loads that need escorts (730:50-5-3(8)) |
The escort vehicle is a pickup of at least 1/4 ton or a car of at least 2,000 lb with the company name, city and state on both sides, 12 in red flags on 45-degree staffs, an OVERSIZE LOAD sign at least 10 in high, an amber beacon or light bar visible 500 ft (never blue), a radio with 1-mile range, a STOP/SLOW paddle and a full-size spare, and its operator carries $1,000,000 combined single limit insurance (730:50-5-16). Oklahoma residents always need Oklahoma certification, and out-of-state certificates count only from states with a reciprocal agreement.
Travel times, curfews and holidays
Every permitted load except an overweight-only one moves in daylight, one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset (47 O.S. 14-101(F)); overweight loads at legal dimensions may run around the clock.
- Night: only when ODOT endorses an oversize permit for night travel for good cause, on terms it sets; no size threshold for night moves is published, and an Annual Envelope permit is void if used in darkness.
- Weekends: no statewide ban in 47 O.S. 14-101 or OAC 730:50, so daylight Saturday and Sunday moves are allowed; houses and buildings moved under 14-103C may not move on weekends.
- Interstate curfew: oversize loads stay off the Interstate in Oklahoma, Tulsa and Cleveland counties 7:00–9:00 AM and 3:30–6:30 PM Central, Monday–Friday. The 2-mile stretch of I-35 in Norman between SH-9 East (Exit 108) and SH-9 West (Exit 106) is exempt, and overweight-only, longer combination and special combination vehicles are not covered.
- Oklahoma City and Tulsa: no OS/OW loads on I-235 between I-40 and I-44, no wide loads on westbound I-44 from Exit 125C to SH-3, I-35/I-240 loop ramps not recommended over 90 ft without steerable axles, no OS/OW loads in downtown Tulsa, and 13 ft 5 in under 2nd Street on I-244 (ODOT Restriction List, Oct 16, 2026). Loads that start, end or travel on Oklahoma City streets also need city approval from [email protected], with 2 business days allowed.
- Seasonal limits: no frost-law program. ODOT and local authorities may post lower weights when weather would seriously damage a road (47 O.S. 14-113), effective once signs are up and DPS is notified, and local authorities may not issue overweight permits; posted bridges are on ODOT's red/green load-posted bridge map.
| Holiday | No permitted moves |
|---|---|
| New Year's Day | Thu Jan 1 |
| Memorial Day | Mon May 25 |
| Independence Day | Sat Jul 4 |
| Labor Day | Mon Sep 7 |
| Thanksgiving Day | Thu Nov 26 |
| Christmas Day | Fri Dec 25 |
| New Year's Day 2027 | Fri Jan 1, 2027 |
The statute bars every permitted vehicle, oversize or overweight, for the whole of each day, and it expressly allows moves on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day and Veterans Day. ODOT publishes no holiday calendar or before-and-after window, and it does not say whether a weekday is also closed when a holiday falls on a weekend.
What catches carriers in Oklahoma
Out-of-state plates on in-state moves
A vehicle with out-of-state plates cannot be permitted for a move that starts and ends in Oklahoma unless it is prorated under IRP or temporarily registered, and every OS/OW vehicle must be registered for at least the weight it carries, or the 90,000 lb maximum.
OAC 730:50-5-3(1); ODOT Restriction List
No tolerance on permit weights
Oklahoma applies no tolerance to permitted weights: a permitted single axle stops at 20,000 lb or 600 lb per inch of tire tread, whichever is less, and a lift axle at 8,000 lb.
OAC 730:50-5-3(5); 730:50-5-4(a)(5), (d)
2 in of clearance, every structure
Every permitted load must clear overhead structures by at least 2 in, which is the margin we hold against ODOT's Vertical Clearance of Bridge Structures map before applying.
OAC 730:50-5-6(a)(4)
Minimum speeds
A load on the Interstate must be able to hold 40 mph and one on a turnpike 60 mph, and OkiePROS asks the applicant to attest to both.

Self-issuing the wrong permit
ODOT's Restriction List warns that self-issuing a multi-trip permit for the wrong load type ends in revocation, with no refund and no revision.

Turnpikes, superloads and Oklahoma's high-wide corridors
Three things change an Oklahoma permit beyond the size tiers: Turnpike Authority approval, the OL-1 standard trucks that define a superload, and the high-wide corridors written into state law.
Turnpike approval and clearances
ODOT's rules reach turnpikes that carry an Interstate, US or state designation, but turnpike travel still needs Oklahoma Turnpike Authority approval, and OTA sends trucking inquiries to ODOT's permit line. ODOT's Oct 16, 2026 list shows 14 ft 0 in clearance on the whole Turner Turnpike (13 ft 11 in eastbound under the Chandler bridge), 15 ft 10 in on the Creek Turnpike, 14 ft 3 in on the Will Rogers Turnpike under 290 Rd with no overweight loads on its bridge over SH-88 at Claremore, and 10 ft width limits on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike.
Turnpike tolls and limits
Tolls are paid by PIKEPASS or by PlatePay, which mails an invoice at a higher rate, and toll classes are published only through 6 axles. Annual Envelope permits may use only the Indian Nation, Cimarron, Cherokee, Chickasaw and Muskogee turnpikes, loads over 9 ft 6 in wide there must use PIKEPASS or PlatePay, and manufactured homes over 14 ft wide may not use any turnpike.
Superloads
Any overweight load beyond ODOT's Standard Drawing OL-1 trucks, which run from 93,000–95,000 lb on 5 axles to 200,000–202,000 lb on 14, is a superload. ODOT's Bridge and Maintenance Divisions review the route under the AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation; a route not studied before needs a structural analysis of each bridge unless a comparison shows stresses no greater than OL-1, and ODOT may add a pavement evaluation (OAC 730:50-5-4).
Dual-lane trailers
Trunnion superloads need at least 4 tires and no more than 20,000 lb per axle, one axle per lane, at least 14 ft out-to-out width (16 ft before July 13, 2026), and no more than 16 ft wide on Interstates or 20 ft on state highways; they are meant for short hauls that start or end in Oklahoma, with an exception for the Panhandle.
High-wide corridors
47 O.S. 14-126 designates routes for loads up to 28 ft wide and 23 ft high, including all of US-83 in Beaver County, US-183 from the Texas line to SH-51 and US-169 from the Kansas line to SH-266. Future overhead obstructions on them must clear 18 ft and new bridges must carry a 315,000 lb design vehicle, and a DOT permit is still required to use them.
State lines and creek bridges
The OK-78 bridge over the Red River takes no overweight loads (72,000 lb maximum); on OK-9 at the Texas line, loads over 13 ft 6 in high need their Texas permit first; and I-35 at the Kansas line is held to 14 ft high, 16 ft wide and 80,000 lb unless a Kansas permit comes first. From Oct 26, 2026, I-35 over South Branch Hickory Creek in Love County and Caddo Creek in Carter County is limited to 11 ft wide.
Crossing into a neighboring state
- South into Texas: TxDMV's single trip is $60 plus a maintenance fee above 80,000 lb, Texas loads also move in daylight by default, and overweight loads using OK-23 at the line need the Texas permit number first; the full set is on our Texas oversize permit page, and the oversize load checker runs a load's size and weight against the Texas triggers.
- East into Arkansas: ODOT's list closes US-64 at the Arkansas line to OS/OW loads and OK-9A at Fort Smith to all permitted loads, and US-70 to Broken Bow is a red route. Arkansas then adds a 7–9 AM and 4–6 PM weekday curfew in Little Rock, covered in our Arkansas oversize and overweight permits guide.
- Northeast into Missouri: MoDOT permits start at $15, and its annual longer combination vehicle permits accept 90,000 lb combinations entering from Oklahoma within 20 miles of the border; see our Missouri oversize permits page.
Oklahoma oversize permit questions
What does Oklahoma require for pilot car certification?
Every for-hire escort driver needs ODOT certification: age 18 or older, a valid license and a driving record issued within 30 days, then the Oklahoma State University CEAT course and exam, passed with at least 75%, renewed every 5 years (OAC 730:50-5-17). Oklahoma residents always need Oklahoma certification; out-of-state drivers can use a home-state certificate only where Oklahoma has a reciprocal agreement.
Where is the OkiePROS permit login?
Permits are ordered in OkiePROS, ODOT's online permit manager, once ODOT has a company profile on file with a copy of the submitter's driver's license. OkiePROS builds a route from the origin, destination and dimensions, auto-approves a safe route, sends restricted ones to review, and takes credit card or bond payment, with delivery by email, fax or pickup.
Who answers the Oklahoma oversize permit phone line?
The ODOT Size and Weight Permit Division answers at 405-425-7012, Monday to Friday from 8 AM to noon and 1 to 4 PM, and at [email protected]. Monthly billing accounts call (405) 521-2591. When the office is closed, emergency moves are authorized through the DPS Communications Center at 405-425-2424, and Highway Patrol Troop S is at 405-521-6060.
Can an Oklahoma oversize permit cover night travel?
Only with a night endorsement, which ODOT may add to an oversize permit for good cause on terms it sets; there is no published size limit for it. Otherwise the permit's hours run from one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset. Overweight-only loads at legal dimensions may travel 24 hours a day, and emergency authorizations can allow night, weekend or holiday travel.
Which holidays stop oversize moves in Oklahoma?
Six: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. On those days no permitted vehicle may move at all, overweight-only loads included, and Annual Envelope holders must comply too (47 O.S. 14-101(G)). Moves remain legal on the three holidays the statute names as open: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day and Veterans Day.
Does Oklahoma have an annual overweight permit?
Several. The $4,000 Annual Envelope permit covers non-divisible loads up to 12 ft wide, 14 ft high, 110 ft long and 120,000 lb on green state highway routes, in daylight and off the Interstate. Special purpose annuals cost $60 for Interstate overweight and $70 for oversize plus overweight on the Interstate, and fire apparatus and implements of husbandry get a free annual overweight permit.
Do oversize loads need permission to use Oklahoma turnpikes?
Yes. ODOT permits reach turnpikes that carry an Interstate, US or state highway number, but turnpike travel must also be approved by the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority, which sends trucking inquiries to ODOT's permit line. Loads must hold 60 mph there, and clearances vary: 14 ft 0 in on the Turner Turnpike and 15 ft 10 in on the Creek Turnpike.
