Michigan Oversize Permits and Restrictions

MDOT MiTRIP permits, escorts written into each permit, the 11-county curfew, the Canada crossings and spring weight restrictions

Quick answer

How are Michigan oversize permits issued?

Apply online in MiTRIP, reached through the MDOT Permit Gateway with a MiLogin account; MDOT's Transport Permits Unit reviews it. A single trip costs $15 when only the size is over legal and $50 once any axle is over legal weight, and it runs up to 5 days. MDOT permits cover state trunklines only, so county roads and city streets need their own permits.

Updated October 2026 by the HTS Logistics broker team (FMCSA MC# 1178470).

Checked October 2026; the issued permit controls

Michigan counts axles and their spacing instead of capping gross weight, so a legal Michigan truck can reach 164,000 lb on 11 properly spaced axles (MDOT, updated April 7, 2026). That grandfathered exception to the federal standard is more than twice the 80,000 lb gross allowed next door in Ohio and Indiana, two of the states in our oversize permits by state guide. The permit program runs on guides rather than rules: the House Fiscal Agency reported in 2018 that MDOT had promulgated no administrative rules for it, so conditions sit in the T-1, T-2 and T-3 guides and the special provisions printed on each permit.

HTS Logistics arranges heavy haul moves through Michigan as a licensed broker (MC 1178470). The carrier we book hauls the load; we order its MiTRIP permit, the county permits for any leg off the trunklines and the bridge escorts at Mackinac or the Detroit River. MDOT accepts applications from permit services only once the carrier is registered in the Permit Gateway, so that registration is the first thing we confirm. MDOT's FAQ says single-trip permits are usually issued within 12 business hours and can be requested up to 7 business days ahead.

When Michigan requires a permit and how to get one

MDOT's Development Services Division runs the Transport Permits Unit from its Lansing central office and takes applications online only; its permit contacts page lists no street address. A single-trip permit covers one trip within 5 days, with an optional return in the same 5 days on the reversed route for the same configuration or an empty trailer, and it must be in hand before the load enters Michigan.

Single-trip permits top out at 16 ft wide, 15 ft high and 150 ft long, and past any of those the move becomes a superload (below). Extended permits, MDOT's annual option for construction, agricultural, pipe and pole, mobile home and other categories, are not available to for-hire carriers (T-2), so hired moves run on single trips.

PermitFee
Single trip, over-dimension at legal weight $15
Single trip, over legal axle weight (with or without extra size) $50
Extended permit renewal, over-dimension at legal weight $30 per truck, trailer or piece of equipment
Extended permit renewal, overweight $100 per truck, trailer or piece of equipment

Farm-to-farm-only extended permit 10% of the prorated overweight fee
Mackinac Bridge Authority escort $100 per vehicle
International Bridge escort (from Oct 1, 2026) $185 USD

MDOT publishes no per-mile, ton-mile, superload or engineering fee, and a local road agency may charge no more than $50 for a single trip or $100 a year for a weight permit (MCL 257.725). The House Fiscal Agency's 2018 review noted that the fee structure dated to 1998. State Police escorts and inspections are billed to the carrier at overtime cost (MSP Official Order 06-23).

Escort and pilot car rules in Michigan

MDOT publishes no numeric escort triggers for general loads in any edition of its T-2 guide; it writes escorts into each permit through Special Provision 11 (one escort follows) and Special Provision 12 (one escort leads), so the issued MiTRIP permit is the escort plan. Michigan also neither regulates nor certifies escort services, a contrast with the certifying states on our pilot car requirements by state page.

Michigan escort rules that MDOT and the bridge authorities publish
LoadEscort requirement
General loads (not mobile homes) Set on the permit: Special Provision 11 adds a following escort and Special Provision 12 a leading one; MSP Official Order 06-23 confirms MDOT requires one or two private escorts above certain dimensions
Over 14 ft 6 in high, when a front escort is required The front escort carries a fixed measuring device set to clear the load (Special Provision 12); superload routes are surveyed with a height pole (Form 2465)
Over 90 ft long on an Interstate A pilot vehicle, as stated by the Mackinac Bridge Authority; MDOT's own T-2 does not state it
Mobile home or building module wider than 12 ft but not over 14 ft 1 rear escort (T-3)
Mobile homes and modules over 14 ft wide, or over 100 ft long Front and rear escorts, with radio contact to the towing vehicle over 14 ft wide (T-3)
Mobile homes and modules over 12 ft wide and over 14 ft 6 in high Front and rear; the front escort carries a measuring device (T-3)
Police escort ordered by MDOT, usually a superload At least 2 Michigan State Police members, one leading and one trailing, on overtime billed to the carrier and booked through MSP Operations at 517-241-8000; a motor carrier officer inspects the vehicle, load and driver first
Mackinac Bridge or International Bridge crossing The bridge authority's own escort across the span, booked at least 24 hours ahead

A Michigan escort vehicle is a passenger car or pickup with at least one flashing or rotating amber light on the roof or cab, visible 500 ft, and a roof-mounted OVERSIZE LOAD sign 5 ft by 12 in with 8 in black letters on yellow (T-2 section G). Radio contact with the towing vehicle is required when Special Provision 21 is on the permit.

Travel times, curfews and holidays

MDOT issues permits for daylight hours, one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, and T-2 limits them to Monday through Friday; other hours can be written into a permit (Special Provision 1).

  • Weekends: MDOT's permit FAQ now allows Saturday all day and Sunday until 3:00 PM for loads up to 10 ft wide, 14 ft high and 90 ft long, requested with the weekend box on the MiTRIP single-trip application. That conflicts with the Monday–Friday rule in T-2 (10/2023), so the issued permit decides, and mobile and modular homes never qualify.
  • Curfew: when Special Provision 15 is on the permit, no movement 7:00–9:00 AM or 3:00–6:00 PM in Genesee, Ingham, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Kent, Macomb, Muskegon, Oakland, Saginaw, Washtenaw and Wayne counties, which take in Detroit, Flint, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Ann Arbor, Jackson, Saginaw and Muskegon.
  • Night: single-trip permits do not cover night moves. Emergency moves (power outages, highway closures, derailments, bridge hits, severe weather) may run outside daylight once the route is reported to the MSP Operations Desk at 517-241-8000, and a carrier without an extended permit applies through the Permit Gateway within 5 business days after the move.
  • Spacing and wind: vehicles moving under one permit stay 2,000 ft apart (MDOT permit provisions), and the permit is void when wind exceeds 25 mph (Special Provision 18).
  • Annual construction equipment permits: no daily hour limit and no weekend ban; only Memorial Day weekend, the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekend are restricted, and counties over 150,000 people may add limits (MCL 257.725(12)).

When a holiday falls on a Friday or Monday, the ban covers the whole 3-day weekend (T-2 section H). The permit office closes on MLK Day, Presidents' Day, Juneteenth, Election Day (Nov 3) and Veterans Day (Nov 11), but loads may move on those days.

Michigan spring weight restrictions and permits

Michigan's frost law is statutory: MCL 257.722(8) cuts axle loads during March, April and May, and MDOT, county road commissions and cities may start sooner or suspend them (257.722(10)), so actual dates come from numbered MDOT bulletins and local notices rather than the calendar. For an oversize load the larger effect is on which permits can be issued at all. Other states' programs are compared on our frost laws by state page.

  • 2026 on state trunklines: Bulletin #1 took effect at 6 p.m. Feb 17 from the Indiana and Ohio lines north to the US-10 (Ludington), US-127, M-61, US-23 (Standish) line; the whole Lower Peninsula was clear by 6 a.m. Apr 23 (Bulletin #5) and the Upper Peninsula by 7 a.m. May 15 (Bulletin #8), when MDOT declared the season complete.
  • How much comes off: seasonal routes take a 25% cut on rigid (concrete) pavement and 35% on flexible pavement, so an axle 9 ft or more from its neighbors drops from 18,000 lb to 13,500 lb or 11,700 lb, and T-1 lists the steering axle at 11,700 lb under frost restrictions. Green and gold all-season routes keep normal weights, but a vehicle on a seasonal route within 5 miles of a Special Designated Highway still uses the reduced figures (T-1).
  • Permits in the restricted area: MDOT issues no single-trip permits for overweight loads or for loads over 14 ft wide, 11 axles or 150 ft long, and extended permits stay valid for oversize only (2026 bulletins). MDOT's FAQ words the overweight ban as covering every MDOT route, so we plan as if all trunklines inside the zone, all-season routes included, are closed to overweight permits until the lift, and confirm at 517-241-8999.
  • County roads: county agencies keep separate calendars and suspend their own permits. Washtenaw County issues only seasonal transportation permits while its restrictions are on, Livingston County restores single-move OS/OW permits only once it lifts, and 60 of the 83 counties link an Oxcart permit page from the County Road Association map.
  • Checking status: the MDOT hotline (800-787-8960) and the newest numbered bulletin on MDOT's Spring Weight Restriction Bulletins page show the current zone lines. On Oct 17, 2026, Bulletin #8 was still the latest and all 83 counties showed no restriction.

What catches carriers in Michigan

The 2 in clearance buffer

Since May 4, 2020, MDOT subtracts 2 in from the measured underclearance of every structure on a route, and an application whose height exceeds that buffered figure is not issued. A load over 13 ft 6 in also needs a certification that the route was driven to check clearances.

MDOT Two-inch buffer notification; T-2 section F

One object per overweight permit

An overweight permit covers one object, and no wheel may carry more than 700 lb per inch of tire tread width (850 lb per inch for empty self-propelled earthmoving equipment), so two machines on one overweight trailer cannot ride on a single permit.

MDOT T-2 section D

Annual permits are not for hire

Extended permits, MDOT's annual option, are not available to for-hire carriers, so a hired carrier moving a contractor's machine needs a single-trip permit for every move, at $15 or $50 each.

MDOT T-2

The county leg is a separate permit

MDOT permits are not valid on county roads or city streets (condition K). County road commissions issue their own, many through Oxcart, and the County Road Association of Michigan answers questions at 517-482-1189.

MDOT permit conditions; MDOT FAQ

Mackinac, the Canada crossings and Michigan superloads

Michigan's toll crossings are bridges, not roads: MDOT lists the Mackinac, Blue Water, Gordie Howe International and International bridges as public toll bridges, plus the privately owned Ambassador Bridge and Detroit Windsor Tunnel, and each sets its own oversize limits and escort charges.

Mackinac Bridge (I-75)

Every permitted move calls the Mackinac Bridge Authority at 906-643-7600 at least 24 hours ahead and crosses in daylight behind an MBA escort. MDOT's condition says the permit may not be valid in wind over 25 mph, while the MBA's own policy keeps over-dimensional vehicles off at 35–50 mph. The span takes 144,000 lb at most, vehicles over 30 tons hold 20 mph, and the $100 MBA escort fee, charged since Jan 29, 2024, applies to vehicles over 10 ft wide, over 90 ft long without their own pilot vehicle or over 80,000 lb without an MBA heavy truck permit. Trucks pay $5.00 per axle.

International Bridge (Sault Ste. Marie)

Call 906-635-5255 ext. 0 at least 24 hours ahead for the required IBA escort. The bridge bars loads over 144,000 lb or 17 ft high, escorts loads over 11 ft 4 in wide southbound or 12 ft northbound and over 90 ft long, and closes to oncoming traffic for loads over 13 ft 6 in wide. Since June 17, 2026 over-width loads are held to 15 ft Monday–Thursday, with wider ones crossing on Fridays only. The escort fee is $185 USD and the commercial toll $6.75 USD per axle from Oct 1, 2026.

Blue Water Bridge (Port Huron)

MDOT runs the US side (810-984-3131), wants 24 hours' notice and charges eastbound trucks $5.25 per axle, cards only. The Canadian operator bars loads over 17 ft 4 in wide, requires its escort at 12 ft 6 in wide or 101 ft long, and lists special-load fees of CAD 84.25 overnight or CAD 281.50 by day; its page does not say which direction those fees apply to, so we confirm when registering at 519-336-2720 ext. 1.

Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit Windsor Tunnel

The Ambassador Bridge's oversize procedure starts at 9 ft wide: book at least 24 hours ahead at 313-989-0136 option 2 (MDOT's condition Y lists 313-849-5244), within limits of 13 ft 6 in wide, 14 ft high, 80 ft long and 146,000 lb on its oversize page. Its Aug 1, 2026 rate page lists a $135 escort for loads 9 ft to 13 ft 6 in wide, while its FAQ still shows $125 and 144,000 lb, so the booking call settles both. The tunnel stops at 12 ft 8 in high and 8 ft 6 in wide, so no over-width load uses it.

Gordie Howe International Bridge

Open since July 27, 2026, the bridge takes oversize and overweight loads only on MTO and/or MDOT permits, with a call to its Traffic Management Centre at 1-800-204-3616 at least 24 hours ahead and a check-in at the port of entry, which has no parking or holding area. Oversize and overweight loads are barred 7:00–9:00 AM and 3:00–6:00 PM; WDBA gives its envelope as 17.3 ft high (16.4 ft at the hazmat canopy), 11.8 ft wide, 153,000 lb and 99 ft long, accepts all nine hazmat classes, and charges trucks $8.75 USD per axle.

Class D bridges

MDOT's Class D list (updated Oct 1, 2026) bars extended permits of every type from 50 structures, among them the Mackinac Bridge, the International Bridge, I-94 westbound over the St. Clair River and CN railroad, and the Belle Isle bridge, so an extended permit does not cover them.

Superloads

Over 16 ft wide, 15 ft high or 150 ft long, with no weight threshold, a load is a superload. File the MiTRIP application, then email [email protected] a shipper's letter on company letterhead explaining why the load cannot be reduced or shipped by rail or water, plus Form 2465 certifying a height-pole route survey; MDOT asks for up to 10 business days once it has everything, and any signal work goes to an MDOT-prequalified contractor.

Crossing into a neighboring state

  • South into Ohio: the Ohio Turnpike takes no vehicle over 10 ft wide or 13 ft 6 in high through sunrise Jan 2, 2027, and Lucas and Wood counties around Toledo sit inside ODOT's weekday curfew for loads over 12 ft wide, as our page on Ohio oversize and overweight permits sets out.
  • Southwest into Indiana: the DOR permit does not apply to I-65 or I-70 inside I-465, loads over 14 ft 4 in wide lose weekend travel, and the Indiana Toll Road keeps its own weight limits; all three are covered in our Indiana oversize permit rules.

Michigan oversize permit questions

What does a MiTRIP single-trip permit cost?

$15 when the load is over-dimension at legal weight and $50 once it is over legal axle weight, with or without extra size (MCL 257.725; MDOT T-2). Extended permits renew at $30 or $100 per truck, trailer or piece of equipment, and the annual construction equipment permit is $264 per power unit. Bridge escorts are separate: $100 at the Mackinac Bridge and $185 USD at the International Bridge.

Which website issues Michigan oversize permits?

Permits are ordered in MiTRIP through the MDOT Permit Gateway (MPG), which uses a MiLogin account; MPG support answers at 844-806-0002, option 1, and [email protected]. Applications are paid in the Gateway cart before MDOT processes them, and issued permits arrive by email from [email protected]. Permit services can apply only after the carrier has registered in MPG.

Can oversize loads move on weekends in Michigan?

Some can. MDOT's permit FAQ allows Saturday all day and Sunday until 3 PM for loads no more than 10 ft wide, 14 ft high and 90 ft long, requested with the weekend box in MiTRIP, although the T-2 guide still says Monday through Friday. Mobile and modular homes may not move on weekends at all (MCL 257.719a), and holiday weekends close to every permitted load.

Does MDOT certify pilot car drivers?

No. MDOT states that Michigan does not regulate or certify escort services. The permit decides whether an escort follows (Special Provision 11) or leads (Special Provision 12), and the escort vehicle is a passenger car or pickup with an amber light visible 500 ft and a 5 ft by 12 in OVERSIZE LOAD sign. Police escorts, when MDOT orders them, come from the State Police.

Which Michigan loads need superload review?

Any load over 16 ft wide, 15 ft high or 150 ft long; MDOT's definition has no weight element. After the MiTRIP application, the carrier emails a shipper's letter and the Form 2465 route survey certification to [email protected], and MDOT asks for up to 10 business days once it has everything. A police escort, if ordered, brings a State Police inspection before the move.

Can I get an overweight permit during Michigan's spring weight restrictions?

Not a single-trip one inside the restricted area: MDOT issues none for overweight loads, or for loads over 14 ft wide, 11 axles or 150 ft long, until the bulletin lifts that zone, and extended permits stay valid for oversize only. A public emergency is the stated exception. In 2026 the restrictions ran from Feb 17 to May 15 on state trunklines.

Which Michigan counties have oversize curfews?

Eleven, when Special Provision 15 is printed on the permit: Genesee, Ingham, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Kent, Macomb, Muskegon, Oakland, Saginaw, Washtenaw and Wayne, with no movement 7 to 9 AM or 3 to 6 PM. The Gordie Howe International Bridge applies the same two windows to oversize and overweight crossings, and annual construction equipment permits can carry extra limits in counties over 150,000 people.
