Maine Oversize and Overweight Permits
BMV overlimit permits in MoveMeMaine, the ch. 156 fee bands, pilot and police escort tables, the Maine Turnpike and posted spring roads
Quick answer
Which office issues Maine overlimit permits?
The Secretary of State's Bureau of Motor Vehicles, through its Overlimit Permit Unit in Augusta, issues overlimit permits for non-divisible loads under 29-A M.R.S. 2382, online in MoveMeMaine after a first contact with the unit. Single-trip fees run $6 to $27.50, set by whichever exceeded limit costs most. The permit covers MaineDOT roads; the Maine Turnpike Authority sells its own $10 day permit.
Updated October 2026 by the HTS Logistics broker team (FMCSA MC# 1178470).
Checked October 2026; the issued permit controls
Maine's legal height is 14 ft with the load, 13 ft 6 in of vehicle plus a 6 in load allowance (29-A M.R.S. 2380(2)), above the 13 ft 6 in that New Hampshire and Vermont set. The allowance does not apply on the Maine Turnpike, where 13 ft 6 in is the limit and many bridges clear only that. Our oversize permits by state guide puts Maine's limits beside its neighbors'.
HTS Logistics brokers heavy haul transport into Maine under MC 1178470; a booked carrier moves the load while we order the BMV permit, make sure the driver buys the $10 Turnpike day permit at the toll plaza when the route uses I-95 between Kittery and Augusta, and book any State Police escort directly with the troop at least 3 working days ahead. Maine's escort table splits Maine-only permits from multi-state ones, so we settle which permit the load runs on before counting pilot vehicles.
Legal limits in Maine
Off the Interstate, Maine's axle limits run above the federal ones: 22,400 lb on a single axle, 38,000 lb on a tandem and 48,000 lb on a tri-axle (29-A M.R.S. 2353(4)), and a 3-axle tractor with a tri-axle semitrailer may gross 100,000 lb, the absolute operating maximum (2352). On the Interstate the figures fall to 20,000 lb single (22,000 lb at or under 73,280 lb gross), 34,000 lb tandem and 80,000 lb under the bridge formula (2355), though the BMV fee rule treats I-95 from the New Hampshire line to Exit 113 in Augusta, Turnpike included, as a general-law highway under state limits.
| Limit | Maine | Federal baseline | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Width | 8 ft 6 in | 8 ft 6 in (102 in) on the National Network | Listed appurtenances up to 3 in per side excluded (2380(3)) |
| Height | 14 ft | No federal limit | 13 ft 6 in of structure plus 6 in of load (2380(2)); 13 ft 6 in with no load allowance on the Maine Turnpike |
| Semitrailer length | 53 ft | States must allow at least 48 ft | With the 2390(1)(J) conditions (45 ft 6 in kingpin, 3 1/2 ft setback); 74 ft overall off the National Network; combinations over 74 ft stay on the National Network plus 1 mile; single vehicle 45 ft |
| Gross weight | 80,000 lb | 80,000 lb | 5+ axle combinations; 100,000 lb for a 3-axle tractor with tri-axle semitrailer; 69,000 lb for 4 axles |
| Single axle | 22,400 lb | 20,000 lb | Off the Interstate; 20,000 lb on the Interstate above 73,280 lb gross; 600 lb per inch of tire width (2353(5)) |
| Tandem axle | 38,000 lb | 34,000 lb | Off the Interstate, with tri-axles at 48,000 lb; 34,000 lb on the Interstate |

When Maine requires a permit and how to get one
The Overlimit Permit Unit in the BMV's Office of Motor Carrier Services issues permits for non-divisible loads under 29-A M.R.S. 2382 with MaineDOT guidance: online in MoveMeMaine once the carrier has made first contact with the unit, by faxed MV226 application, or at BMV branch offices. Permits cover roads and bridges maintained by MaineDOT and the New England Transportation Consortium network (29-250 C.M.R. ch. 157, Sec. 8); county and municipal ways need local permits (2382(3)).
Overweight permits issue without detailed MaineDOT review up to set envelopes: 120,000 lb on a 4-axle tractor-semitrailer, 130,000 lb on 5, 140,000 lb on 6, 159,000–167,000 lb on 7 and 177,000 lb on 8, with a 3% tolerance on any axle or group. Heavier loads are 'extreme loads' that need MaineDOT or Maine Turnpike Authority engineering review, for which the rule says to allow 2–5 business days (ch. 157, Sec. 12(2)).

Fees
| Excess weight over legal | Excess width over 8 ft 6 in | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 5,000 lb | Up to 2 ft | $6 |
| 5,001–10,000 lb | 2–3 ft | $8 |
| 10,001–15,000 lb | 3–4 ft | $10 |
| 15,001–20,000 lb | 4–5 ft | $12.50 |
| 20,001–25,000 lb | 5–6 ft | $15 |
| 25,001–30,000 lb | 6–7 ft | $18 |
| 30,001–35,000 lb | 7–8 ft | $21 |
| 35,001–40,000 lb | 8–9 ft | $25 |
| Over 40,000 lb | Over 9 ft | $27.50 |
Legal weight is 34,000 lb on 2 axles, 54,000 lb on 3, 69,000 lb on 4 and on single units of 5 or more, 80,000 lb on 5+ axle combinations and 100,000 lb on a 3+3 axle combination. Excess length and height over 14 ft have their own $6 to $27.50 bands, and the permit pays only the highest fee of the limits it exceeds (ch. 156, Sec. 4).
| Permit or charge | Fee |
|---|---|
| Instant permit book, 25 permits | $75 |
| Long-term (monthly) overdimensional permit | $25 per month |
| Long-term overweight, 6 axles: 100,000–110,000 lb / 110,000–120,000 lb | $90 / $150 per month |
| Long-term overweight, 7 or more axles, same bands | $65 / $115 per month |
| Maine Turnpike oversize or overlength permit (1 day) | $10 plus the toll |
| Maine State Police escort | Actual cost, billed by the Department of Public Safety, 4-hour minimum |
| Municipalities and government agencies | No fee |
Worked example from the bands: a 5-axle combination at 100,000 lb and 12 ft wide is 20,000 lb and 3 ft 6 in over legal, which fall in the $12.50 weight band and the $10 width band, so the permit costs $12.50, the higher of the two (our arithmetic from ch. 156). The statute lets single-trip fees range from $6 to $30 (2382(2)).
Escort and pilot car rules in Maine
Maine's pilot and police escort tables are in 29-250 C.M.R. ch. 157, Sec. 16, with separate figures for Maine-only and multi-state permits, and the statute makes a police escort mandatory at 125 ft long or 16 ft wide, State Police only on the Interstate (29-A M.R.S. 2382(9-A)). Pilot drivers need no certification, only to be at least 18 and licensed for 2 consecutive years, a lighter bar than some states on our pilot car requirements across states page set.
| Load | Escort requirement |
|---|---|
| Over 12 ft and under 16 ft wide (Maine-only permit); 12 ft or more (multi-state permit) | 1 pilot vehicle, leading on undivided highways and trailing on divided ones |
| Over 80 ft and under 125 ft long (Maine-only); 80 ft or more (multi-state) | 1 pilot vehicle |
| Rear overhang over 5 ft and under 15 ft 1 in | 2 pilot vehicles, one leading and one following, under Table 1; BMV's web summary lists this as a one-pilot trigger, so we follow the rule's two |
| Rear overhang over 15 ft | 1 pilot plus 1 police escort, or 2 police escorts when the State Police, MaineDOT or BMV deem it necessary (Secs. 16, 17) |
| 16 ft to under 20 ft wide, or 125 ft to under 150 ft long | 1 pilot vehicle plus 1 police escort, State Police on the Interstate |
| 20 ft wide or more, or 150 ft long or more | 2 police escorts plus 1 pilot; utility and town notices, travel in clear visibility outside commuter and school-bus hours, and a press release and municipal notice at 150 ft or more (Secs. 8, 16) |
| Over 15 ft high | 1 pole car (Sec. 12(5)) |
| Night move | One or more Maine State Police escorts unless the troop commander waives them (Sec. 18) |
| Emergency off-hour move | 1 pilot vehicle (Sec. 15) |
A Maine pilot vehicle is a car or light truck under 8,500 lb GVWR with both outside mirrors, roof amber lights (two 6 in flashers, two 4 in rotators or a 4-light bar), a two-way radio reaching at least 1/2 mile, and an OVERSIZE LOAD sign of 5 ft by 12 in or more with 8 in letters, covered with its lights off when not escorting. The permittee books State Police escorts directly with the troop at least 3 working days ahead, and permits that need them generally are not issued for Saturdays (ch. 156, Sec. 3; ch. 157, Sec. 17).
Travel times, curfews and holidays
Overdimensional loads travel in daylight, between half an hour before sunrise and half an hour after sunset (ch. 157, Sec. 8), and overweight-only loads that move with traffic may run at any hour (Sec. 12(2)). Night moves need a State Police troop commander's authorization and State Police escorts, with flashing amber beacons in place of or beside the flags (Sec. 18).
- Saturday mornings, Apr 22 to Nov 18, 2026: overdimensional loads may travel Monday through Friday and on Saturdays from 30 minutes before sunrise until noon, and from Jun 3 to Aug 26 Saturday travel on I-95 ends at 9 AM (BMV 2026 holiday letter; Sec. 8). Outside that span the rule gives no Saturday hours, and Sunday travel is out except for July and August Sunday permits pre-cleared by MaineDOT Traffic Engineering. BMV's web summary still says weekend moves are not routinely permitted in July and August; the rule and the letter control.
- Busy days: Maine has no weekday rush-hour curfew, but moves should run when traffic is lightest and may be refused near fairs and festivals, and loads 20 ft or more wide or 150 ft or more long avoid commuter and school-bus hours (Sec. 8).
- Weather and speed: no movement in poor visibility or with rain, snow, slush or ice; if Interstate speed is cut to 45 mph the load leaves at the first opportunity; and a load pulls over when more than 7 vehicles are following (Sec. 14).
- Emergency off-hour moves: pre-approval from a State Police troop commander, or the MEMA duty officer in a declared emergency, limited to 75 ft long, 12 ft wide and legal height, with reflectorized signs, amber lighting and 1 pilot (Sec. 15).
- Timber harvesting equipment: may move at night in March and April when the air is 32 F or below and the ground is solidly frozen, up to 11 ft 6 in wide and 75 ft long, with 2 pilots (Sec. 18).
- Mobile and modular homes: units between 11 ft 6 in and 13 ft 6 in wide may not move on Saturdays after noon (after 9 AM on I-95 from Jun 3 to Aug 26) or on Sundays; over 13 ft 6 in and up to 14 ft 6 in also not on Friday afternoons; over 14 ft 6 in also not on Fridays or on a Thursday before a Friday holiday (2026 holiday letter).

Maine posted roads: the 23,000 lb spring limit
MaineDOT may close all or part of a state or state-aid highway to heavy vehicles at any time from November 15 to June 1 (17-229 C.M.R. ch. 308; 29-A M.R.S. 2395), and it posts more than 2,000 miles of road each spring thaw. A posted state road's maximum is 23,000 lb: vehicles registered at 23,000 lb or less are exempt, and a heavier one is legal only if empty or actually under 23,000 lb. BMV grants no overweight permit for a posted road. How that 23,000 lb figure compares with New Hampshire's 30,000 lb is shown in frost laws by state.
- Frozen roads: closures do not apply while the road is frozen, meaning air at 32 F or below with no water in the cracks, or water showing while the adjacent gravel driveways, shoulders or lawns stay frozen (ch. 308, Sec. 4).
- Notice: each closed state road carries an orange poster at each end showing the posting date, the road, exempt vehicles, the MaineDOT representative and the legal references (Sec. 3). Counties and towns post local ways the same way, but cannot post state or state-aid highways (2395(4)).
- 2026 dates: MaineDOT published no statewide posting or lifting dates. Town notices it hosts show Standish posting its roads at 23,000 lb from Feb 23 to Apr 30, 2026, subject to earlier rescission, and Millinocket closing posted roads from Mar 9, 2026 to vehicles registered at 23,000 lb or more 'unless solidly frozen'.
- Exemptions and permits: 2-axle vehicles registered over 23,000 lb up to 34,000 lb carrying a special commodity, such as home heating fuel, groceries, bulk milk or U.S. mail, are exempt; heavier special-commodity trucks can get a MaineDOT Limited Load Permit at a partial load, and bulk perishables a one-move Trip Ticket at 80,000 lb (Secs. 5–7). An overweight equipment move on a posted road needs a written MaineDOT exception for an emergency or unique non-recurring move (Sec. 8), or waits for the road to come off posting.
- Checking: MaineDOT's Posted Roads page carries the current posted roads and bridges map, a map of roads likely to be posted and town and county lists, and the region offices answer at 207-885-7000 (Southern), 207-624-8200 (Midcoast), 207-562-4228 (Western), 207-941-4500 (Eastern) and 207-764-2200 (Northern). The fine is at least $250 and cannot be suspended (2395(7)).
What catches carriers in Maine
The Turnpike's 13 ft 6 in
Maine's 14 ft legal height with load stops at the Maine Turnpike, where the limit is 13 ft 6 in with no load allowance and many bridges clear only 13 ft 6 in, so a 13 ft 10 in load that needs no height permit elsewhere in Maine needs another route or a special MTA permit. Breaking the height or width limits is a $100 to $1,000 infraction, with a $250 minimum for striking a posted bridge, and whoever damages a bridge or overpass is liable for all repairs.
MTA Rules ch. 1, Secs. 7, 10; 29-A M.R.S. 2380(6)-(7)
Two pilots for a 6 ft overhang
Table 1 of ch. 157 puts two pilot vehicles, one ahead and one behind, on any rear overhang over 5 ft and under 15 ft 1 in, though BMV's web summary lists that overhang as a one-pilot trigger. Long beams or poles with 6 ft of rear overhang therefore need two pilots in Maine even when their width needs none.
29-250 C.M.R. ch. 157, Sec. 16, Table 1
OVERWIDTH LOAD is an accepted sign
Maine's load sign may read OVERSIZE LOAD or, where it applies, OVERWIDTH LOAD, no smaller than 7 ft by 18 in, lettered 10 in high with a 1.4 in stroke, on the front bumper and the rear; WIDE LOAD is not on the list, as our OVERWIDTH LOAD and other sign wording by state table records. Red or fluorescent orange flags 18 in square go on the ends of the front bumper and of the load, an amber light (6 in flasher, 4 in rotator or 4-light bar) sits centered on the cab, and all of it is covered or switched off once the vehicle is no longer oversize.
29-250 C.M.R. ch. 157, Sec. 14(2)
Permits cannot be bought far ahead
Most Maine permits cannot be obtained more than 10 days in advance, and instant permits are good for one trip within 7 days, so an auction pickup whose date is still moving gets its permit once the date is fixed.
29-250 C.M.R. ch. 156; ch. 157, Sec. 8
The Maine Turnpike, regional permits and clearances
The Maine Turnpike, I-95 from Kittery to Augusta, runs under Maine Turnpike Authority rules (MTA Rules ch. 1, Secs. 7(L) and 10), and a BMV permit is still needed for every non-Turnpike road on the trip.
Turnpike permits
Oversize and overlength permits are bought at any Turnpike toll plaza for $10 plus the toll and are valid one day. No permit goes over 14 ft 6 in wide, loads over 10 ft wide enter and exit only at plazas designated for wide loads, loads must hold at least 45 mph, and travel is daylight only unless the State Police and the MTA jointly allow a night move. Service areas allow no overnight parking, loads stay out of maintenance zones that restrict wide loads, and heavier, taller or wider moves need a special MTA permit after bridge analysis at the owner's cost (MTA, 800-698-7747).
Regional permits
Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont and Rhode Island share the New England Transportation Consortium permit, and the NASTO Northeast agreement uses the same envelope: 108,000 lb on 5 axles, 120,000 lb on 6 or more, 90 ft long, 13 ft 6 in high and 14 ft wide, plus 6 in of eaves on home components (ch. 157, Sec. 20; 29-250 C.M.R. ch. 155).
Clearances, wires and railroads
Maine posts bridges and overpasses that clear less than 14 ft 6 in, the permittee arranges any movement of overhead wires, and a pole car leads loads over 15 ft (Sec. 12(5)). The railroad must be contacted when underclearance is 10 in or less, when a police escort is required, or when the load cannot hold 10 mph through a crossing (Sec. 14).
Long-term permits
Monthly permits for up to 12 months cover legal height (14 ft with load), up to 11 ft 6 in wide, 45 ft single units or 75 ft combinations (80 ft for tree-length logs), and overweight to 120,000 lb on tri-axle semitrailer combinations with tandem or tridem drive; some bridges are posted at 90,000 lb (Sec. 12(1)).
53 ft trailers and 74 ft combinations
BMV's 53-foot trailer page says no permit has been needed since 2004 but still lists a 43 ft kingpin limit, while the statute now allows 45 ft 6 in (2390(1)(J)(1)) and controls. Combinations over 74 ft stay on the Interstate (Turnpike included), the Scarborough Connector, the South Portland Spur and US 1 from I-95 in Brunswick to Bath, plus 1 mile. Vehicles 14 ft or more wide on highways of 4 or more lanes keep a 5-second following distance behind large vehicles (Sec. 12(3)).
Crossing into a neighboring state
- South and west into New Hampshire: NHDOT single trips are valid 5 business days, the size-only permit costs $6, and anything over 13 ft 6 in high is a supermove that can need a licensed engineer's inspection, all covered on our New Hampshire oversize permits page.
- On to Massachusetts: Maine borders only New Hampshire, so a load bound for Massachusetts crosses New Hampshire on its own permit or on a New England Transportation Consortium permit valid in all three states. For MassDOT's side, including the 12 ft 6 in height of the Callahan and Sumner tunnels, read Massachusetts oversize and overweight permits.
Maine oversize permit questions
What are Maine's single-trip permit fees?
Single-trip fees under 29-250 C.M.R. ch. 156 run from $6 to $27.50, and the permit pays only the highest fee among the limits it exceeds. Width up to 2 ft over 8 ft 6 in costs $6, rising to $27.50 past 9 ft over; weight runs from $6 for up to 5,000 lb over legal to $27.50 past 40,000 lb over. The Maine Turnpike adds its own $10 day permit plus the toll.
What is the legal height in Maine?
14 ft with the load on most highways: the vehicle may stand 13 ft 6 in and the load may rise 6 in above that (29-A M.R.S. 2380(2)). On the Maine Turnpike the limit is 13 ft 6 in with no load allowance, and many Turnpike bridges clear only 13 ft 6 in. Over 15 ft high a pole car leads the load, and bridges under 14 ft 6 in carry clearance postings.
When does Maine require a police escort for an oversize load?
By statute at 125 ft long or 16 ft wide, with Maine State Police on the Interstate (29-A M.R.S. 2382(9-A)). The rule adds a police escort for rear overhang over 15 ft and two police escorts at 20 ft wide or 150 ft long, and night moves need State Police escorts unless the troop commander waives them. The permittee books the troop at least 3 working days ahead and pays actual cost, with a 4-hour minimum.
Can oversize loads move on Saturday in Maine?
From Apr 22 to Nov 18, 2026, yes, from 30 minutes before sunrise until noon; between Jun 3 and Aug 26 the Saturday window on I-95 closes at 9 AM. Sunday travel is not routine, holiday weekends are closed, and permits that need State Police escorts are generally not issued for Saturdays. Outside the season the rule gives no Saturday hours at all.
Do I need a separate permit for the Maine Turnpike?
Yes. The Maine Turnpike Authority sells oversize and overlength permits at any toll plaza for $10 plus the toll, valid one day, and caps them at a width of 14 ft 6 in and a height of 13 ft 6 in. Loads over 10 ft wide use designated wide-load plazas, and every load must hold 45 mph. Anything heavier, taller or wider needs a special MTA permit after a bridge analysis at the owner's cost.
What weight can trucks carry on Maine posted roads?
23,000 lb. While a road is posted, which MaineDOT can do from November 15 to June 1, a vehicle registered over 23,000 lb may use a posted state road only empty or at an actual weight under 23,000 lb, unless an exemption or MaineDOT permit applies. Closures do not apply on frozen roads, and BMV issues no overweight permits for posted roads. The fine starts at $250 and cannot be suspended.
Who can drive a pilot car in Maine?
Anyone at least 18 who has been licensed for 2 consecutive years; Maine has no pilot certification. The vehicle is a car or light truck under 8,500 lb GVWR with roof amber lights, a radio reaching at least half a mile and an OVERSIZE LOAD sign, and the pilot signals the load off the road for emergency vehicles or when 7 or more vehicles are following (29-A M.R.S. 2382(9); ch. 157, Sec. 16).
